Santa Clara, Calif., January 28, 2003 - Coherent, Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) (Nasdaq:COHR) will demonstrate a new low-power ultraviolet (UV) diode laser technology at Photonics West 2003. Producing greater than 1 mW of continuous-wave (CW) output at 375 nm, this technology is ideal for applications ranging from flow cytometry and high-throughput screening to confocal microscopy, semiconductor test and measurement, and biological and chemical detection.

Based on GaN technology, the device has been designed as a reliable, easy-to-integrate, low-power UV source. The laser is conveniently housed in a small cylindrical package for simple adaptation and mounting. It is also multi-layer shielded for electrostatic discharge (ESD) and mechanical protection. Cooled for stability and long lifetime, the device features a large thermo-electric cooler with bi-polar linear drives, an internal cooling fan with anti-vibration mounting, and a convenient back panel on-off switch with power LED indicator

"This diode laser technology has been designed for applications that demand low-power UV output from a compact, stable, robust and easy-to-use device," said Daniel Callen, product manager for Laser Diode Modules. "We've engineered these qualities into a fully contained laser, so the user does not need to worry about costly power supplies or heat dissipation."

Founded in 1966, Coherent, Inc. is a Standard & Poor's SmallCap 600 company and a world leader in providing photonics-based solutions for the commercial and scientific research markets.
