Fujitsu Introduces World's Fastest CMOS 14-bit DAC; Versatile New MB86065 Delivers Complete Platform Solutions



SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec. 7 /-- Fujitsu Microelectronics America (FMA) today introduced a new 14-bit, 1.3GSa/s digital-to-analog converter (DAC), a single-channel device derived from the successful and award-winning MB86064 dual 14-bit, 1GSa/s DAC developed by Fujitsu in 2003.

The new MB86065, the industry's fastest 14-bit DAC, is the second ASSP based on Fujitsu's second-generation DAC technology. The new DAC builds on the superior, high direct-IF architectures enabled by the MB86064, which won the European Electronics Awards "Component Product of the Year" in 2003. It excels in communications and consumer applications where there is no second transmit or diversity channel, and in cost-effective multi-sector systems.

The significantly increased conversion rate to 1.3GSa/s enables direct-IF frequencies to be guaranteed above 400MHz. This feature widens the spurious- free generating region and relaxes subsequent filtering requirements. The higher direct-IF architectures are more versatile than direct conversion, enabling true platform solutions capable of rapid re-targeting to different market and frequency plan requirements.

"The higher direct-IF frequencies impact end-applications significantly by reducing the overall design effort, thus lowering the total cost of ownership and speeding time-to-market."

The MB86065 DAC is backward-compatible with the "DAC A" channel of the MB86064 and integrates the same pioneering Waveform Memory Module (WMM) developed by Fujitsu for the earlier version. The WMM enables waveforms to be downloaded and executed on-chip, which for device test and evaluation reduces the need for a high-speed data generator.

The MB86065 continues to offer the best system-partitioning solution with digital pre-processing using the latest 0.65 micron ASIC or FPGA technology. In particular, reprogrammable implementations enable flexibility with no impact on the mixed signal component, which defines system performance.

A characterized system does not require substantial re-design of analog circuitry and any associated calibration algorithms -- such as I&Q gain and phase trimming -- to address different frequency and carrier requirements. "This delivers significant savings across a product portfolio," said Thomopoulos.

The MB86065 is housed in a Fujitsu enhanced fine-pitch ball grid array (EFBGA) package, measuring 12mm x 12mm. Customer development kits and sample devices will be available beginning in early 2007, with mass production scheduled for April 2007. Pricing is $34 each in 10,000-unit quantities.
