Enhancements on Allen-Bradley Kinetix 6000 Servo Drive Give Machine Builders Greater Application Versatility

Power and functionality enhancements enable machine builders to save panel space and meet more demanding application challenges

MEQUON, Wis., April 1, 2004 - Machine builders who need increased servo drive power and functionality in a compact, space-saving package have new options for an effective solution with the expanded power ranges and features available in the Allen-Bradley Kinetix 6000 digital servo drive from Rockwell Automation.

The expanded power ranges allow machine builders and end users to apply Kinetix 6000 servo drives to demanding motion applications that require higher power. With new power ranges of 1 kW to 11 kW (230V) and 2 kW to 22 kW (460V), the drive can provide functionality for a wide range of applications, including packaging, material handling, and converting.

"Machine builders who have adopted the wire- and space-saving design of our original Kinetix 6000 servo drive can now take advantage of those features in a much wider power range," said Randy Holterman, Kinetix 6000 product manager, Rockwell Automation.

"Rockwell Automation worked closely with customers to identify additional benefits that allow the use of the Kinetix 6000 in more challenging applications."

Benefits of the new version include:

New Line Interface Modules (LIM). Customers can use just one of these compact modules instead of nine individual components, eliminating up to 98 interconnecting wire terminations. The latest release of Line Interface Modules extends the power range covered and adds features that allow the machine builder to handle the generation, protection and control of the power (Three- phase for the drives, single-phase and 24V DC for the rest of the application) for the entire control panel. The new LIM features support for up to 16 servo drives and provides 65,000 AIC of branch protection without external fusing. The LIM also features single-phase 230V AC for power needs such as controller power supplies and laptops. Machine builders can use the LIM with a wide variety of servo and AC drives to greatly reduce the time and cost needed to provide the support components that are usually needed.

Enhanced Power Rails. The Kinetix 6000 uses a unique Power Rail that greatly simplifies the mounting and wiring of a servo system. The Power Rail is a high-power backplane that replaces the expensive and time-consuming wiring needed by a multi-axis servo system. Additions to the line further reduce the required panel size and allow the user to mount one to eight axes of servos per Power Rail.

Resistive Brake Module (RBM). The RBM supplies safety stopping solutions by providing electrical separation between a drive and motor. Resistive Brake Modules are especially useful when a drive must be shut down while others continue to run. The RBM simplifies the design of safety circuits and can be used with a wide variety of drives and motors.

Additional Feedback-Only Axis. The feedback-only axis capability provides support for two feedback devices on each Kinetix 6000 integrated axis module or axis module. This allows the machine designer to easily and inexpensively add one feedback device to an existing drive. This device can then be used as a feedback-only axis for gearing and "PCAMing" type motions or for general-purpose position monitoring without additional hardware.

The Kinetix 6000 is part of the Kinetix Integrated Motion solution, which includes the Allen-Bradley ControlLogix or SoftLogix controllers, SERCOS interface digital motion modules, Allen-Bradley servo drives, motors, and actuators.
