Digi Extends ConnectCore i.MX Product Family and Freescale Collaboration with New iDigi-Enabled Wireless Module

Wireless module with Freescale processor and iDigi cloud computing service ideal for developing wireless multimedia devices

MINNETONKA, Minn. - Digi International (NASDAQ: DGII) today introduced the ConnectCore(TM) Wi-i.MX53, the second in a series of core processors based on the Freescale Semiconductor i.MX processor family. The new solutions-on-module enables wired and wireless networking of multimedia products requiring high-end processing power and high-definition video display capabilities. It can connect to the iDigi cloud out of the box, allowing customers to easily develop cloud-connected wireless multimedia devices.

The ConnectCore Wi-i.MX53 builds on the successful ConnectCore Wi-i.MX51 module by providing a form factor compatible option with significantly improved processing, memory, video and connectivity capabilities. The ConnectCore i.MX family is scalable and ideal for developing wireless medical devices, security/surveillance equipment, industrial devices and digital signage.

"The ConnectCore Wi-i.MX53 is based on Freescale's most advanced available i.MX processor," said Larry Kraft, senior vice president of global sales and marketing, Digi International. "The combination of module and iDigi cloud computing service allows customers to focus on their core business and develop high-performance connected products quickly."

"Digi enables i.MX53 customers to achieve fast market penetration with their products and migrate to a chip-level solution as volume increases," said Ken Obuszewski, director of product marketing for Freescale's Multimedia Applications Division. "Digi is a leading developer of embedded modules, and we are pleased to collaborate with Digi for solutions-on-module technologies."

The ConnectCore Wi-i.MX53 is a 32-bit module featuring the high-performance Freescale i.MX53 ARM® Cortex(TM) A8 processor at up to 1 GHz. The module features dual 10/100 MBit Ethernet options, dual-CAN bus, pre-certified 150 Mbps 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, and optional Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity with Health Device Profile (HDP) support. Pre-certification eliminates the need to certify wireless products which can be costly and time consuming. It also offers an integrated power management IC, 1080p/720p video decoding/encoding, 2D/3D hardware acceleration, dual display/camera capabilities, industrial temperature variants, accelerometer and Digi XBee ZigBee connectivity options.

The ConnectCore Wi-i.MX53 is iDigi ready. iDigi is the embedded industry's first ready-to-use cloud computing platform for Machine-to-Machine (M2M) network management. It enables secure remote access, control and management of network-connected devices and complete cloud-based application development.

The ConnectCore Wi-i.MX53 will offer out-of-the-box software platform support for Linux, Android and Windows Embedded Compact 7. Digi's wireless design division, Spectrum Design Solutions, is also offering custom design services for Freescale's i.MX53 application processor.

The ConnectCore Wi-i.MX53 module will be available in May 2011. Customers can begin development now on the ConnectCore Wi-i.MX51 and migrate to the ConnectCore Wi-i.MX53 using the same code. For more information, visit digi.com/ccwimx53. For a product image, visit www.digi.com/news/graphics.jsp.
