DiCon's MEMS Split and Select Paves a New Road to Directionless ROADM Network Management


Richmond, CA - DiCon Fiberoptics' MEMS Split and Select paves a new road to directionless traffic management in ROADM networks. Optical splitters simultaneously broadcast incoming signals to an array of DiCon's well-recognized MEMS 1xN Switches. As each switch selects from all the signals, any signal can be routed to one or more output ports. The signals may be directed through the switches to the splitters as well. The Split and Select arrives as part of DiCon's inauguration of a new colorless/directionless ROADM product family aimed at optimizing metro and regional optical networks.

The Split and Select's unique design enables network architects to readily apply directionless routing to their systems. The array structure reduces size and exploits electronics sharing for more versatility and less power consumption. While the stock model comes in four channels, the Split and Select may be scaled to any number of channels to suit a particular architecture. The Split and Select's use of DiCon MEMS 1xN Switches ensures its superior optical performance and reliability.

DiCon's MEMS 1xN Switch, which has been in high-volume production for over 10 years, is the key to the Split and Select's directionless functionality. After several input signals enter a switch, a DiCon MEMS mirror tilts precisely to direct a single signal to an output port. The MEMS mirror has an exceptional switching time of less than 20 ms. Manufactured under DiCon's proprietary specifications, the switches demonstrate excellent durability, thermal stability, and repeatability (exceeding Telcordia GR-1221 standards).
