Rockwell Automation Expands Remote Access Offering with Dial-in Ethernet Modem

New remote access Dial-in Ethernet Modem remotely connects with all devices on an Ethernet network, helping to reduce downtime, optimize productivity and cut travel costs

MAYFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio, Oct. 6, 2003 - Rockwell Automation's new Dial-in Ethernet Modem expands remote connectivity to control systems beyond that of a standard serial modem by enabling access to an entire Ethernet network, rather than a single device. As manufacturers continue to standardize on faster, open Ethernet networks, the use of Ethernet modems for remote dial-in capabilities will expand their ability to capture real-time production and equipment status information.

"The Dial-in Ethernet Modem delivers more value to customers because it can connect with any device on an Ethernet network - not just Rockwell Automation products," said Steve Hickox, Remote Access Modems product manager, Rockwell Automation. "Now, customers are not only connected to a controller, they are directly connected to all the attached computers, operator interface screens, printers or any other device on the network - and they can remotely diagnose and solve problems on any of them."

Rockwell Automation's Dial-in Ethernet Modem reduces travel costs and downtime by allowing maintenance personnel and engineers to remotely diagnose problems, modify programs, upload and download new programs, share files, collect data and monitor system status. The Ethernet modem uses a Microsoft® dial-up networking connection to improve data transfer speed over a standard phone line by as much as 40 percent compared to serial modems. In addition, because many users are already familiar with Microsoft's dial-up networking technology, the modem can reduce training requirements and simplify implementation.

Unlike competitive modems, Rockwell Automation's Dial-in Ethernet Modem is designed to withstand harsh, industrial environments and requires no extra enclosure.
