DC Switching Power Supply can be configured as UPS.

Press Release Summary:

NTQ123-DC input switcher operates directly from -48 Vdc telecomm power bus. It accepts input voltage range of -36 to -72 V and can deliver 120 W of output power at +5, +3.3, +12, and -12 V for network, data, and telecom applications. DC supply can be operated in parallel with ac input version. Their outputs can be connected together in N+l fault tolerant parallel fashion, which effectively provides ability for uninterruptible power supply.

Original Press Release:

Astec Power's -48VDC Input Switcher Operates in Parallel with AC Input Version, Providing Built-in Uninterruptible Power Capability Fully Compatible with Its AC Input Cousin, the NTQ123-DC Enables Seamless Backup Power Transfer

CARLSBAD, Calif. - June 21, 2002 - Astec Power, a leading merchant supplier of power conversion solutions, today introduced its first -48 Volt Direct Current (VDC) input, low profile, switching power supply, the NTQ123-DC. Designed to operate directly from a -48VDC telecomm power bus, the unit accepts a wide input voltage range of -36 to -72 V and can deliver 120W of output power, with 30 CFM of forced air flowing across its open U channel chassis. The unit is completely compatible with the original AC input version of the NTQ123. Since the two main outputs of both AC and DC input versions feature 'single wire' current sharing, their outputs can be connected together in N+l parallel fashion, which effectively provides the ability for uninterruptible power supply functionality.

This first DC input version of Astec Power's Net Power Series of supplies addresses the challenging needs of network, telecom and data storage equipment designers, who must have reliable but cost-effective power solutions. In the past, the demand of "No-down-time-allowed" operation necessitated an external uninterruptible power supply. But with the increasing availability of -48VDC telecom style backup power systems, the fault tolerant redundancy that had to be external can now be made internal, by using AC and DC input versions of the same supply. The creator of the original NTQ123, Astec Power's Low Power Products manager, Tom Tillman said, "The release of this new supply should cause a small revolution in the design of high reliability data and telecommunications equipment."

Providing the four most common output voltages for data and telecom applications (+5V, +3.3V, +12V and -12V), this low profile (1.5 inches high), compact footprint (four by seven inch) power supply delivers excellent performance from a low cost package. And with over-voltage protection on the two main outputs, current overload protection on all outputs and thermal overload protection for the entire unit, the NTQ123-DC is a robust workhorse that has a demonstrated Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) of more than one million hours, while delivering full load at 25 degrees Centigrade.

The unit provides a full 20 milliseconds of holdup time, even while delivering 120 watts of output power. The two main outputs (+5V and +3.3V) of the unit are adjustable and can be adjusted separately, a minimum of plus and minus five percent each. Both main outputs also have remote voltage-sensing capability. With the ability to source up to 24 amps from the +5V output and up to 25 amps from the +3.3V output, and peaks of up to 28 amps from either one, the NTQ123-DC is flexible enough to support a wide variety of mixed-mode, high-speed digital circuitry.

Each unit has its own "Power Fail" output warning signal line, which transitions to a logic LOW at least four milliseconds before loss of output voltage regulation on the two main outputs. Like the AC input version, each unit has its own "Remote Inhibit" input signal line so that it can be remotely turned on and off in the power up/down sequencing of a complex design.

The NTQ123-DC complies with worldwide safety and performance standards and has UL, CSA, CE, CB, VDE and NEMKO approvals. Designed to meet FCC Class B, CISPR22 Level B, EN55022 Class B and VDE 0878 PT3 Class B emissions, the NTQ123-DC also meets all other industry standard noise and immunity requirements, when properly grounded and installed within an approved enclosed chassis.

Available now, OEM pricing for the NTQ123-DC starts at $115.00 each. For more information, contact a local Astec Power representative or distributor.
