Artesyn Launches Three New Families Of Pol Converters For Cost-Critical Applications

Artesyn Technologies has launched three new families of single-output, non-isolated point-of-load (POL) converters that are specifically designed for use in cost-critical applications such as computer workstations, PCs, servers and data storage devices. Known as the SIL06, SIL15 and SIL30 Series, these new low-cost DC/DC converters employ an open-frame single-board construction to minimize cost, weight and thermal management issues, and use fixed-frequency switching technology to maximize conversion efficiency. Each of these converters features a wide-range adjustable output - enabling designers to accommodate various semiconductor supply voltages with the same unit - which is preset to the required value by a single external resistor. All three families are intended for through-hole board mounting and offer a choice of vertical or horizontal package orientation to simplify design-in. The vertically-oriented models feature single-in-line connections and minimal footprints, enabling designers to achieve very high component placement densities and thereby save on valuable board space.
The SIL06 Series is the smallest of the new POL converters, and can handle output currents up to 6A. The horizontal mounting version measures just 1.2 x 0.61 inches (30.5 x 15.5mm), and has an above-board height of 0.53 inches (13.4mm); the vertical mounting version has a footprint of only 1.2 x 0.45 inches (30.5 x 11.3mm), with an above-board height of 0.61 inches (15.5mm). There are two models in the series, with nominal input voltages of 5VDC and 12VDC. The 5V input model has a typical conversion efficiency of 89% and provides an output that is trimmable from 0.9V to 3.3V. The 12V input model offers even higher conversion efficiency - typically 91% - and an exceptionally wide output trim range, spanning 0.9V to 5.0V.
Artesyn's new SIL15 Series POL converters handle output currents of up to 15A. The module incorporates a power stage heatsink, but is still extremely compact. The horizontal mounting version measures 1.2 x 1.1 inches (30.5 x 27.9mm), and has an above-board height of 0.47 inches (12mm); the vertical mounting version has a footprint of only 1.2 x 0.4 inches (30.5 x 10.2mm), with an above-board height of 1.1 inches (27.9mm).
There are two models in the series, with nominal input voltages of 5VDC and 12VDC. The 5V input model has a typical conversion efficiency of 89% and provides an output that is trimmable from 0.9V to 3.3V. The 12V input model has a typical conversion efficiency of 91%, and an output trim range of 0.9V to 5.0V.
The new SIL30 Series POL converters can handle output currents as high as 30A, using a dual phase switching topology to minimize input and output ripple. The horizontal mounting version measures 2.4 x 1.35 inches (60.9 x 34.3mm), and has an above-board height of 0.47 inches (12mm); the vertical mounting version has a footprint of only 2.4 x 0.5 inches (60.9 x 12.7mm), with an above-board height of 1.25 inches (31.7mm). The converter has a nominal input voltage of 12V, a typical full load efficiency of 91%, and an output that is trimmable over the range 2.5V to 5.0V. The SIL30 also features remote sense capabilities, allows current sharing between parallel modules, and incorporates over temperature protection as standard.
All SIL06, SIL15 and SIL30 Series POL converters offer a remote on/off facility and a 'power good' output signal. The converters have no minimum load requirement, and are capable of sinking as well as sourcing current, for termination applications. They feature input under-voltage lockout, and are fully protected against over-current and short-circuit conditions.
Artesyn's SIL06, SIL15 and SIL30 Series POL converters have an operational temperature range of 0°C to +50°C ambient, and carry a full set of international safety approvals, including EN60950 and UL/cUL60950.
Pricing for 10,000-piece quantities is $5.80US for the SIL06, $8.50US for the SIL15 and $13.85US for the STL30; standard lead times on all these POL products are from stock to 8 weeks.
