DC/DC Converters offer up to 94% efficiency.

Press Release Summary:

E-class non-isolated, point-of-load converters feature power density of 247 W/in³. They are offered with 5, 10, or 15 A outputs and have no minimum load requirement. Used with 12 V nominal on-board bus source, units will operate from input voltage of 10-14 V. Open-frame, single-board converters employ synchronous buck topology, using fixed-frequency 300 kHz switching and ultra low on-resistance MOSFETs. Surface-mount packages have heights of only 0.32 in.

Advanced 12V-Input Point-of-Load Converters Combine Efficiency with Compactness for Leading-Edge Designs

Up to 94% efficiency and 247 W/in3 / 15 W/cm3 power density
Surface-mount packages have heights of only 0.32 inches / 8.2mm

June 19, 2003 --- Artesyn Technologies (NASDAQ NM:ATSN) has launched a new series of 12V-input, point-of-load DC/DC converters, offering state-of-the-art performance to support leading-edge product designs. With efficiencies to 94%, power densities to 247W/in³ (15W/cm³), and typical heights of 0.32 inches (8.2 mm), these non-isolated converters support developers seeking to pack more functionality into smaller real-estate.

The new 'E-class non-isolated' point of load (niPOL) DC/DC converters are available with 5, 10 or 15A outputs, and have no minimum load requirement. Designed for use with a 12V-nominal on-board bus source - a popular standard in equipment areas including data communications and IT - the converters will actually operate from an input voltage from 10-14V. This wide range gives developers the means to enhance the economics of distributed power management architectures by using a purpose-designed 'intermediate bus converter', as well as the more conventional isolated brick converter. The wide input voltage range additionally meets the popular Infiniband architectural specification.

At launch, the new 12V-input E-class comprises four models, offering output voltages which may be set anywhere from 0.8V to 3.63V by means of a single external resistor. This provides wide-ranging flexibility for the low-voltage silicon levels in use today - allowing developers to upgrade product designs without PCB changes if IC voltage requirements migrate.

The 10A and 15A variants are available in horizontal, surface-mounting packages measuring 1.3 x 0.53 inches (33 x 13.5 mm), with an above-board height of 0.32 inches (8.2 mm). The 5A is available in a horizontal, surface-mounting package measuring 0.80 x 0.45 inches (20.3 x 11.4 mm), with an above-board height of 0.235 inches (5.97 mm). The 15A version is additionally available in a single-in-line form factor for through-hole mounting, with a 2 x 0.31 (50.8 x 7.8 mm) footprint and a profile of 0.5 inches (12.7 mm).

The niPOL converters employ a synchronous buck topology, using fixed-frequency (300 kHz) switching and ultra low on-resistance MOSFETs. This delivers very high conversion efficiencies of 94% typical, at 12Vin and 3.3Vand at 15A full load current.

The converters incorporate a number of high-end features to support leading-edge product designs, including remote sense, remote on/off, and comprehensive protection against over-temperature and short-circuit conditions. However, users may optionally order parts without the remote sense and/or trim pin connectors, to simplify second-sourcing.

Artesyn's E-class products are fabricated from surface-mount components, including the magnetics, and are designed for fully-automated assembly to help keep manufacturing costs as low as possible.

An open-frame, single-board construction minimizes cost and weight and simplifies thermal management. The converters will operate over a -40 to +85°C ambient temperature range, and are expressly designed for high reliability, using conservative component de-rating criteria. In addition the 15A variants will deliver their full 55W output at 60°C under natural convection.

The new series carries a full set of international safety approvals - including EN60950 (TÃœV Product Service) and UL/cUL60950. Pricing for 10,000-piece quantities starts at $8.00 US for the 5A part, at $10.45 US for the 10A part, at $14.00 US for the 15A part and the standard lead time is stock to 6-8 weeks.
