DC/DC Converters integrate 48 V with 24 V legacy systems.

Press Release Summary:

Model APC-F501 is a 500 W, full brick converter that supplies greater than 90% efficiency from lower dc voltages up to higher voltage output. IFB3 topology permits nominal input voltages of 24 or 28 Vdc to be boosted up to regulated 28 or 48 Vdc. Model APC2000 supplies up to 2,000 W of 48 Vdc output from 24 Vdc input. Efficiency of four APC500 converters in each APC2000 allows 4 hot-swappable power units in 3U high, 19 in. rack to supply 8 kW of power, or 6 kW of N+1 redundancy.

APC Steps up to the Plate

24V legacy systems aren't a Home-Run product for many telecom service providers, but they appear to have gone beyond the role of Pinch Hitter.

Announced by Advanced Power Conversion PLC of Farnborough, England is a range of the most cost-effective, flexible & scalable solutions to integrate new 48V with 24V legacy power systems and thereby extending the life of installed equipment while providing the new 2.5G and 3G services.

At First Base and unique in the market is the APC-F501. A compact, low profile 500W "full brick" DC:DC converter (2.40 in. Ã- 4.60 in. Ã- 0.50 in.) that supplies high efficiency conversion (typically >90%) from lower DC voltages up to higher voltage output. The versatility of the patented IFB3 (Interleaved Full-Bridge Boost Buck) topology permits nominal input voltages of 24 or 28Vdc to be boosted up to a regulated 28 or 48VDC.

Second Base is reached by incorporating the standard APC-F501 with heatsink and filtering onto a single board. This provides a straightforward, scalable and cost-effective solution to increased power requirements and the versatility needed for N+1 redundancy.

Sitting at the "Hot Corner" on third base is the APC2000, supplying up to 2,000W of 48VDC output from 24VDC input from each 2U x 3U unit. The exceptional efficiency of the 4 x APC500 DC:DC converters in each APC2000 provides excellent power usage and easier thermal management allowing 4 of the Hot-Swappable power units in a standard 3U high 19" mounting rack to supply 8kW of total power, or 6kW of N+1 redundancy. Where space is at a premium, the APC2000 can also be mounted horizontally in a 2U 19" rack supplying 6,000W of total DC power.

With telecom service providers playing hardball, the APC range of Step-Up DC-DC conversion provides a "walk-off homer". An immensely flexible, scalable power solution that is compact, cost-effective and means that new 48V powered technologies can overlay the installed base of 24V powered 2G equipment and operators can protect and leverage their significant investment.
