Framingham, MA, March 31, 2004 - - Artesyn Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq:ATSN) has launched five low-cost 25/20A isolated eighth-brick DC/DC converters that are set to accelerate design migration from standard quarter-brick form factors. Known as 'value' models, the new converters are expressly designed for applications where cost sensitivity has - until now - precluded use of the latest-generation small form factor power converter technology. They offer designers a choice of 1.2V, 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V and 3.3V outputs, and use the same ultra high efficiency topology as other eighth-brick converters in Artesyn's industry-leading Typhoon(TM) product family. The 3.3V model, for example, has a typical conversion efficiency of 91% when delivering its full 20A (66W) output.

All Artesyn Typhoon(TM) eighth-bricks, including the new cost-optimized 'value' models, use a patented full wave coupled inductor topology. Advanced processor-based primary- and secondary-side control techniques, combined with precision timing of the synchronous rectifiers, are employed to maximize efficiency. The topology also eliminates the need for opto-couplers, maximizing reliability and ensuring that the converters provide exceptionally fast transient response capabilities. The output voltage of each of the five value models typically only deviates by 70mV during a 25% step change in load current at rates up to 1A/µs, and completely recovers within 20µs.

All five value models feature a wide input voltage range of 36 to 75VDC, making them ideal for use with telecom-standard 48V supplies, and are fully protected against input voltage transients of up to 100V for 100ms. The converters' outputs can be adjusted from 80% to 110% of nominal, using a single voltage trim resistor. Design-in flexibility is further enhanced by the fact that the converters have no minimum load requirement, and provide a true monotonic start-up characteristic under both normal and pre-biased load conditions. The converters feature remote sense and remote on/off facilities as standard, and have a typical start-up time of 10ms when driving a resistive load.

In common with all Typhoon eighth-brick converters, the 'value' models have an industry-standard 0.9 x 2.3in (22.9 x 58.4mm) footprint, which is 38% less than conventional 1/4 bricks, and are based on an open-frame, single-board package designed for through-hole mounting. The pin-out is identical to standard quarter-brick converters, enabling drop-in replacement. Extensive use of surface-mount components and planar, in-the-board transformer structures helps minimize profile, allowing the installed height to be kept to just 0.3in (7.6mm). This exceptionally low profile means that the converters are suitable for applications involving very tight inter-board spacing, such as latest-generation telecom switches and high-end servers.

Artesyn's eighth-brick 'value' models are specified for operation over the ambient temperature range of -40 to +85°C and can supply full usable power without a heatsink; no de-rating is required down to 100LFM of airflow. The converters feature under-voltage lockout, as well as non-latching over-voltage protection, and are also protected against short-circuit and over-temperature conditions, with automatic recovery. The converters carry a full set of international safety approvals, including EN60950 VDE and UL/cUL60950.

The introduction of the latest 'value' models expands Artesyn's Typhoon family of conventional DC/DC brick converters to a total of 27 different base models; 10 eighth-bricks, 8 single-output quarter bricks and 9 dual-output quarter bricks. They provide designers with considerable freedom of choice for migrating from lower performance older generation quarter and half-bricks.

Sample quantities of Artesyn's low-cost eighth-brick converters are available for immediate delivery, and the standard lead-time for quantity orders is stock to 12 weeks. Priced at $49.50 US in OEM quantities of 1000, Artesyn's 'value' models are believed to be the most efficient and lowest cost eighth-brick converters in their power range on the market today.
