Vishay Adds to FunctionPAK(TM) Family of Fully Integrated DC-to-DC Converters, Providing Power Density of 380 W per Cubic Inch in Compact 0.58

New 10-W, 2-A synchronous dc-to-dc boost converters are highly efficient, complete circuits that enable design of smaller, lighter portable electronics

MALVERN, PENNSYLVANIA - March 4, 2003 - Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE:VSH) today announced the release of two fully integrated FunctionPAK(tm) synchronous dc-to-dc boost converters that provide high power density of more than 380 W per cubic inch in an exceptionally small footprint with dimensions of 0.58 in. by 0.48 in. [14.7 mm by 12.2 mm] and a very low maximum height profile of 0.12 in. [3 mm].

The latest additions to the Vishay's FunctionPAK series are the FX5545G006 and FX5545G106, dc-to-dc converters designed to stabilize rechargeable battery outputs, shift dc voltage levels, filter noise, and reduce ripple in power supplies for end products including cordless phones, PDAs, portable computers, digital cameras, routers, laser systems, battery back-up systems, and low-voltage chip sets.

Each device offers designers the flexibility of using a variety of battery configurations and chemistries -- single-cell Lithium ion, three-cell NiCd, or NiMH battery packs -- to power multiple loads for power amplifiers, microcontrollers, FPGAs, or baseband logic ICs. The FX5545G006 and FX5545G106 convert input voltages ranging from 2.5 V to 6 V to low-ripple output voltages ranging from 3.3 V to 6 V. Output power and maximum current are 7.5 W and 1.5 A for the FX5545G006 and 10 W and 2 A for the FX5545G106.

To provide ultra-high efficiency, the new converters are designed to operate in synchronous rectified pulse-width mode (PWM) under full load while transforming into externally controlled pulse-skipping mode (PSM) under light loads. With 100% duty cycle control for PSM operation, the new FunctionPAK devices behave much like saturated linear regulators to extract maximum power from the battery, prolonging battery life and extending "on" time in end-product systems. Power conversion efficiency in standby and idle modes is further enhanced by a low 1-mA shutdown current.

Both the FX5545G006 and FX5545G106 serve as complete dc-to-dc converter circuits, combining a dc-to-dc controller, MOSFET switches, and up to 18 components in a single compact package. Because no external components are necessary, use of these devices allows designers to reduce component count dramatically while trimming assembly costs, board space requirements, and test time, enabling manufacture of smaller, lighter portable electronics.

The FX5545G006 and FX5545G106 meet military-level specifications for resistance to shock and moisture and operating temperature range, providing reliable operation over an ambient temperature range of -40°C to +85°C without the need for cooling.

Available in a 20-port BGA construction, samples and production quantities of the new FunctionPAK converters are available now, with lead times of six weeks for larger orders.
