Vishay Releases New microBUCK(TM) Integrated Synchronous Buck Regulator

With Wide Voltage Range to 28 V and 95 % Efficiency in Compact MLPQ 4-mm by 4-mm Package

6-A SiC414 DC/DC Converter Features Two N-Channel MOSFETS, Bootstrap Switch, Controller IC, and Fixed 5-V LDO

MALVERN, Pa. - Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) today announced a new device in the microBUCK(TM) family of integrated synchronous buck regulators. The 6-A SiC414 is a dc-to-dc converter solution featuring an advanced controller IC with gate drivers, two PWM-optimized n-channel MOSFETs (high and low side), and a bootstrap switch in a standalone buck regulator configuration in a space-saving MLPQ 4-mm by 4-mm 28-pin package.

The microBUCK family of products leverages Vishay's unique combination of discrete MOSFET design, IC expertise, and packaging capability to provide customers with cost-effective, high-performance integrated solutions. The resulting integrated solutions deliver a significant reduction in board space requirements. This benefits the designer by giving more space for critical system functionality.

The device released today offers a wide input voltage range of 3 V to 28 V, with minimum output voltages down 0.75 V. The regulator minimizes EMI by eliminating PCB traces, while the device's high- and low-side MOSFETs provide low on-resistance for reduced power losses and better performance.

The SiC414 offers the small form factor needed for super-compact, battery-operated portable computing. The constant-on-time controller provides superior transient response. This can reduce output filter cost for a given load regulation target. The device's ultrasonic power save mode delivers improved light-load efficiency, making it an excellent choice for CPU and GPU core voltage regulation in notebook, desktop, and server computers; set-top boxes and HDTVs; and digital consumer equipment.

The microBUCK regulator offers a high power density and improved thermal performance under the full load condition. The device provides high efficiency of 95 %, and is capable of operating with all ceramic solutions and switching frequencies up to 1 MHz. In addition, the SiC414's internal fixed LDO may be used to supply 5 V for the gate drive circuits, or it may be bypassed with an external 5-V supply for optimum efficiency and used to drive external n-channel MOSFETs or other loads.

For reliable operation and easy system integration, the device features cycle-by-cycle current limiting, enable pin, internal soft start, under-voltage lockout, over-voltage protection, a power good output, and thermal shutdown at + 150 °C. The SiC414 is halogen-free according to IEC 61249-2-21I and compliant to RoHS directive 2002/95/EC.
Samples and production quantities of the new microBUCK regulator are available now, with lead times of 10 weeks for initial orders.
