Sipex Introduces PowerBlox(TM), World's Highest Density Power Converters

SP7652 is the first in a series of high efficiency, high current, high voltage step down buck regulators

(Milpitas, CA - June 21, 2004) - Sipex Corporation (NASDAQ: SIPX), a leading supplier of high performance, analog integrated circuits (ICs), today announced the SP7652. This product is the first of Sipex's new PowerBlox(TM) family of high current, high voltage, ultra-miniature DC/DC buck regulators. The PowerBlox family will consist of five products that range from 3A to 8A output current and from 300kHz to 1.2MHz switching frequency. Sipex's PowerBlox are modular solutions which greatly simplify the complex task of developing power systems in modern electronics applications. Sipex has developed a unique packaging technology that produces the industry's smallest 6A component, measuring a mere 7mm x 4mm. The part is packaged in a custom DFN assembly with three integrated heat sinks for outstanding thermal management. PowerBlox ICs integrate the unique capability for the sequential power-on of several supplies using a proprietary chip-to-chip interface. This new product family enables a designer to quickly and easily create a power system with the fewest number of external components.

The SP7652 is a 600kHz, 6A step-down regulator capable of handling up to 28V input and delivering output voltages as low as 0.8V. By integrating the highest efficiency switches with a resistance of only 15mOhm, the SP7652 outperforms all competing solutions with over 92% efficiency at full load. Other device features include programmable soft start, over-temperature protection, dual under-voltage lock-out (UVLO) thresholds, and short circuit protection. The SP7652 can be used in a wide variety of applications due to its programmability and very wide input voltage range of 2.5V - 28V.

"Sipex has developed several key technologies that have come together to create PowerBlox" says Sipex CEO Walid Maghribi. "PowerBlox IC's are the first of several innovative solutions that Sipex is working on diligently in the power management area. These new IC's are the most complex power product offering in the history of the company. They represent our commitment and strategy to deliver high value added products to our customers."

Pricing and Availability
The SP7652 samples are available now, as well as an evaluation board to assist the customer with device characterization. The part is rated over the industrial temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and is housed in a 7mm x 4mm DFN package with three independent heat sinks. Pricing for the SP7652 begins at $2.92 in 10,000 piece quantities.
