Astec Power Introduces High Efficiency Point Of Load (POL) Converter Family

Industry Compatible Non-Isolated Surface Mount Converter Features
Wide Input Range and High Output Current

CARLSBAD, Calif. - April 17, 2002 - Astec Power, a leading merchant supplier of power conversion solutions, today introduced their first 25-watt Point-Of-Load (POL) DC/DC converter. At 126 watts per cubic inch, the 3.3V model of the APC08 product family delivers a full 8 amps (A) of regulated power to its load, at 89 percent efficiency. Housed in an industry standard Surface Mount Device (SMD) package and occupying only one fifth of a cubic inch, the 0.33 inch tall APC08 is sized to fit the most demanding space requirements. Because of its low cost and wide range of applicability, an APC08 can economically replace discrete designs of 10 watts or more while utilizing less board space and keeping the time-to-market for tomorrow's DSP and ASIC designs to a minimum.

Besides being an extremely compact and power dense workhorse, the APC08 boasts versatility and flexibility as its two most outstanding characteristics. With wide input and output voltage ranges-1.8V to 13V in and 0.9V to 3.6V out-and options such as output voltage adjustability, active current sharing between paralleled units and output status indication capabilities, the flexible and versatile APC08 will find itself at home in almost any POL application.

The APC08 family includes six different output voltage models: 0.9V, 1.2V, 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V and 3.3V, with the 0.9V model delivering 9.5A to the load.

When 8 or 9 amps isn't enough, APC08s can easily be operated in parallel, by ordering the active current share option. Connecting units in Parallel will still save more board space than almost any other option would allow. In order for each APC08 to be turned on sequentially, each unit has its own enable pin. Additionally, every unit has built-in over voltage, over current, and over temperature protection, with auto-recovery of any protective shutdown, once the fault is removed.

The wide operating temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees Celsius makes the APC08 ideal for data and telecommunications applications, including wireless transmitters, receivers and base stations. They are also well suited for instrumentation, internetworking devices such as hubs and routers, Automatic Test and Measurement (ATM) equipment, and anywhere where quick time to market is a priority. And at a mere 0.53" wide by 1.3" long and 0.33" high, the APC08 delivers high power from a dense package.

Priced from $11.99 in 1,000 piece quantities, samples of the 3.3V model are available now.
