DC/DC Controllers achieve up to 92% power efficiency.

Press Release Summary:

Models TPS40020 and TPS40021 are single-chip, synchronous buck controllers with input voltages from 2.25-5.5 V and output up to 25 A. They combine Predictive Gate Drive(TM) technology with integrated charge pump to enable regulated 5 V gate drive. Suited for non-isolated systems, units provide programmable fixed frequency up to 1 MHz and output voltage transient comparators with power good indication. They include soft-start and high-side short-circuit protection.

TI's New Low-Voltage DC/DC Controllers Boost Gate Drive Performance in 15-A to 25-A Power Systems

Controllers with Predictive Gate Drive(TM) Ease System Power Supply Design

DALLAS (March 17, 2004) - Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) today announced two new synchronous DC/DC buck controllers that increase high performance in non-isolated systems with input voltages from 2.25 V to 5.5 V and output up to 25-A. TI's newest TPS40K(TM) devices achieve up to 92 percent power efficiency, save board space and simplify power design in industrial, telecom, datacom, wireless base stations and server applications. See: power.ti.com/sc04072.

The TPS40020 and TPS40021 single-chip controllers minimize diode conduction losses associated with high-side and synchronous rectifier N-channel MOSFET transitions. The devices combine TI's Predictive Gate Drive(TM) technology with an integrated charge pump to enable a regulated 5-V gate drive for added performance. The controllers also enhance operation with programmable power supply features such as soft-start and high-side short-circuit protection. The TPS40020 and TPS40021 provide a programmable fixed frequency up to 1 MHz and output voltage transient comparators with power good indication to provide faster response time.

The new controllers are supported by TI's TPS40K Designer software, which includes advanced analysis tools that allow designers to conduct worst-case loop response analysis and component characterization. The TPS40K Designer software, a TPS40021 evaluation module, and application notes are available through power.ti.com.

Key Features of TPS40020 and TPS40021:
Operating Input Voltage 2.25 V to 5.5 V
Output Voltage as Low as 0.7 V with One Percent Internal 0.7 V Reference
Predictive Gate Drive(TM) N-Channel MOSFET Drivers for High Efficiency
Externally Adjustable Soft-Start and Short Circuit Current Limit
Programmable Fixed-Frequency 100 kHz to 1 MHz Voltage-Mode Control
Quick Response Output Transient Comparators with Power Good Indication

Available Today
The TPS40020 and TPS40021 come in a 16-pin, HTSSOP PowerPad(TM) package, and are available now from TI and its authorized distributors. Suggested resale pricing for both devices is $1.15 each in quantities of 1,000 units.
