Fairchild Semiconductor's 1.5 Amp, Step-Down DC/DC Regulators Offer Industry's Best Combination of Efficiency, Performance, Power Density and Size

New DC/DC regulators optimize low-power applications by providing 95% efficiency, 1.5 A continuous load current and 1.3 MHz operating frequency--all in a 3 x 3 mm MLP package

San Jose, Calif.-March 8, 2005--Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) introduces two high-efficiency 1.5 A synchronous DC/DC buck regulators to its portfolio of DC/DC solutions that optimize system power. The FAN2011 and FAN2012 meet critical applications requirements by improving power densities and minimizing board space in systems such as set top boxes, hard disk drives, point-of-load (POL) power and communications equipment. Their compact MLP (molded leadless package), high efficiency (95%), continuous load current (1.5 A), and high operating frequency (1.3 MHz) endow the FAN2011 and FAN2012 with the best available combination of features on the market today.

These synchronous PWM current mode DC/DC converters have on-chip MOSFETs and come in tiny, 6-terminal 3 x 3 mm MLPs. The converters' adjustable output voltage (from 0.8 V to VIN) allows designers the flexibility to address a wide range of DC/DC applications, and their high fixed operating frequency (1.3 MHz) facilitates the use of smaller external components. The combined benefits of high operating frequency and ultra-compact packaging result in more space-efficient, cost-effective designs. Ideal for low-power applications, the FAN2011 is always "on," while the FAN2012 has an enable pin that offers designers the ability to implement power management schemes for power conservation.

"Traditionally, designers have used LDOs in space-limited applications that also require design simplicity. With the introduction of integrated DC/DC regulators like these, designers now have the option of achieving the highest efficiency and space-savings, while maintaining ease of design," said Tivadar Szabo, Fairchild's marketing manager for Ultra-Portables. "Fairchild's new 1.5 A synchronous buck regulators offer the best line-up of combined features for reducing system size, increasing functionality and decreasing board space. In fact, up to 40% board space reduction can be achieved by using Fairchild's regulators when compared to designs that use either linear or non-synchronous regulators."

The new FAN2011 and FAN2012 are the latest examples of how Fairchild solves today's most critical design challenges for specific application segments and the overall power market. As The Power Franchise(TM), Fairchild offers a constantly expanding portfolio of components targeting the optimization of system power including MOSFETs in BGA and FLMP packaging, high efficiency integrated switches, IntelliMAXTM integrated load switches, and MICROCOUPLERsTM (BGA-packaged optocouplers).

These lead-free (Pb-free) products meet or exceed the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020B and are compliant with European Union requirements.
