TI's New Midrange DC/DC Controllers with Predictive Gate Drive(TM) Achieve Up to 96 Percent Power Efficiency

Synchronous ICs with Voltage Feed Forward Topology Simplify System Power Design and Support Inputs of 4.5 V to 28 V

DALLAS (Feb. 16, 2004) - Building on its popular TPS40K(TM) line of DC/DC controllers, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) today announced two new highly efficient, synchronous DC/DC buck controllers that support input voltages from 4.5 V to 28 V. The new controllers leverage TI's innovative Predictive Gate Drive(TM) technology to achieve up to 96 percent power efficiency and ease circuit design in non-isolated power systems in networking, telecom, wireless base stations and computer server applications. The TPS40070 and TPS40071 single-chip devices expand TI's efforts to enable increased high performance over wide input voltage ranges. Both controllers enhance operation with user-programmable power supply features such as under voltage lockout, soft-start and high-side short-circuit protection. For added flexibility TI offers the TPS40070 in a source only mode and the TPS40071 with full source sink operation. Each device has programmable fixed frequency up to 1 MHz and voltage feed forward to provide greater line regulation over the entire input voltage range. TI's integrated Predictive Gate Drive technology minimizes diode conduction losses associated with the high-side and synchronous rectifier N-channel MOSFET transitions, resulting in the highest possible efficiency performance.

The TPS40070 and TPS40071 controllers are supported by TI's TPS40K Designer software. A simple design tool for novice and experienced power supply designers using TI's TPS40K family of controllers, the software includes advanced analysis tools that allow designers to conduct worst-case loop response analysis and component characterization. The TPS40K Designer software, evaluation modules, application notes and reference designs are available through power.ti.com.

Available Today

Both DC/DC controllers come in a 16-pin, TSSOP PowerPad(TM) package, and are available now from TI and its authorized distributors. Suggested resale pricing for the TPS40070 and TPS40071 devices is $1.35 each in quantities of 1,000 units.

APEC

TI will present several technical papers and showcase leading-edge system power management products at the Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC) in Anaheim, Calif., on Feb. 22-26. TI technical engineers also will demonstrate a variety of new products at the company's booth (#300 and #302).
