Dot Hill Introduces Next Generation Storage Solution

Adopted by a Wide Range of OEM Partners as the Foundation for Best-in-Class Storage Solutions, the Technology Is Now Available Through DVS, Hammer, Maximum Throughput, ONStor, Stratus and Others

ORLANDO, Fla., STORAGE NETWORKING WORLD FALL 2006, Oct. 31 -- Dot Hill Systems Corp. (NASDAQ:HILL), a market leader in providing high performance, flexible storage offerings and responsive service and support to OEMs and system integrators (SIs), today announced its new high-performance, modular enterprise storage platform, the Dot Hill 2730, has been adopted by more than a dozen OEMs and SIs including DVS, Hammer PLC, Maximum Throughput, ONStor, Inc. and Stratus Technologies, and has already surpassed the 1,000 unit milestone in shipments.

The 2730 is the first product based on Dot Hill's Rapid Evolution (R/Evolution) architecture. This highly modular, dynamic system is designed to rapidly evolve and support OEM technology, enabling OEMs to quickly achieve sustainable competitive advantage in the Volume Storage Market.

"In many ways, this is the most significant launch ever for Dot Hill," said Dana Kammersgard, president and chief executive officer, Dot Hill. "Based on our own RAID controller technology, this is one of the fastest product ramps we have experienced. We are pleased with the combination of high performance, feature set and scalability that the 2730 delivers. But we are even more excited about the number of OEM partners that have selected the product and are already shipping, proving that we have achieved our goal of creating a market-leading storage platform that offers faster, easier integration of OEM value-added technologies and capabilities. There is very strong acceptance at this price/performance point and we believe there is an opportunity to gain market share with this product offering."

Ideal for a broad range of applications, the 2730 features a 4Gb Fibre Channel host interface and both Serial-ATA (SATA) and Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) disk drives with industry-leading uptime. The 2730 offers scalability and flexibility, enabling customers to expand up to 56 high-performance SAS, low-cost SATA-II drives or any combination of the two for tiered storage implementations.

"We believe the flexibility to intermix SAS and SATA drives within the product, including within a single chassis brings tremendous value to our customers," said Jim Kuenzel, senior vice president of engineering for Dot Hill. "There were significant technical challenges to solve including differential rotational vibration, differing drive latencies and failover response times and along with our OEM partners, we have thoroughly tested these aspects and are delivering a very robust solution."

Additionally, the solution is compliant with the new international environmental standards for the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) and WEEE (Waste for Electrical and Electronic Equipment) mandates.*

The product leverages several unique patented and patent pending technologies that are part of the expanding portfolio of Dot Hill's intellectual property.

The 2730 exhibits blazing performance characteristics for products in the volume storage market -- more than 550MB per second write transactions to mirrored cache and 1.1GB per second streaming reads from cache, establish a leadership position for the R/Evolution technology. In addition, the 2730 transfers more than 110,000 IOPS, enabling faster response times for transaction-oriented applications. One of the keys to this breakthrough in performance is Dot Hill's SimulCache(TM) technology. SimulCache leverages redundant RAID controllers, thus eliminating the performance degradation associated with conventional cache mirroring. The implementation of a high-speed dedicated PCI-X bus streamlines write performance resulting in superior overall system responsiveness.

EcoStor(TM) is an environmentally-friendly, battery-free alternative for cache back up. EcoStor leverages a combination of super capacitors and compact flash technology for non-volatile cache memory in the event of a power failure. In the event of a power interruption, the cache in the storage unit is powered by super capacitors; the cache is then transferred to compact flash, ensuring it is stored safely and securely indefinitely.

EcoStor reduces total cost of ownership and enhances the user experience in a number of ways. With up to a 10-year life span, EcoStor eliminates service calls for battery replacement, new battery inventory management, and the issues of battery disposal, as well as the periodic replacement downtime associated with batteries. Additionally, it offers an improved customer experience upon installation or power restore as it does not require lengthy battery charging time. The array operates in high-performance write-back cache mode within minutes of installation versus hours with batteries.

The 2730 also features Dot Hill's AssuredSnap(TM) technology for improved data availability and business continuity. The 2730 includes up to 16 concurrent snapshots -- a point-in-time virtual copy of data -- that the system can roll back to, should data loss or corruption occur. As all snapshots are preserved in the event of a roll back, AssuredSnap also features a unique roll forward capability as well. Additional AssuredSnap features include writeable snapshots for real-time data mining, rapid application development, the preservation of original and written data, and snapshot reset for scripted backups.

"Customers in all segments of the disk storage systems market are demanding increased capabilities in the areas of performance and reliability. In addition, in many countries they are also placing more emphasis on deploying IT solutions that address environmental concerns in the areas of power consumption and reduction in use of hazardous materials," said Brad Nisbet, Storage Systems program manager at IDC. "Technologies such as Dot Hill's SimulCache and AssuredSnap will help to advance performance and reliability and features such as EcoStor and RoHS compliance will help customers meet a growing set of environmental concerns."

R/Evolution Framework for Faster Time to Market

The 2730 is based on Dot Hill's Rapid Evolution (R/Evolution) architecture that allows OEMs to bring unique products to market, quickly, easily and cost-effectively.

Using modular and bladed components, the R/Evolution(TM) Storage Architecture provides OEMs with a "configure-to-product" model that allows them to customize solutions quickly, easily and precisely. This unique model revolutionizes how OEMs introduce and launch storage solutions, by ensuring opportunities for product differentiation and identification of targeted markets. The result is an innovative product offering which enables partners to easily integrate value-added hardware and software.

"What we are impressed with is that Dot Hill really knows its business," said Tony Asaro, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. "They realize that working with their OEM clients requires a combination of technology, time to market, support and expertise. The 2730 brings a ton of new features including its Rapid Evolution architecture, which enables OEMs to bring product to market quickly and built to meet their needs. We think it's a brilliant approach."
