Danfoss Turbocor VTT Series of Compressors Named Product of the Year at 2015 AHR Expo

Danfoss Turbocor VTT series of oil-free, variable speed, magnetic bearing centrifugal compressors takes home top prize in prestigious AHR Expo Innovation Awards competition after also winning green building category

Danfoss, a leading manufacturer of high efficiency electronic and mechanical components and controls for air-conditioning, heating, refrigeration, and motion systems, was awarded top honors during the 2015 AHR Expo in Chicago when a panel of judges named its Turbocor VTT series of compressors “Product of the Year.”

The Product of the Year Award is given to one of the year’s 10 AHR Expo Innovation Award winners, and was announced during the award presentation ceremony on January 27. Danfoss Turbocor VTT series of compressors had previously been named the 2015 AHR Expo Innovation Award winner in the Green Building category.

Intended for water-cooled chillers and with capacities of 350 tons per compressor, Turbocor VTT (Variable Twin Turbo) compressors are oil-free, variable speed, magnetic bearing centrifugal compressors ideal for commercial air-conditioning or process cooling chillers reaching up to 1,000 tons or more. The Turbocor VTT series introduces IntraFlow™, an innovative and patent-pending technology that improves efficiency and provides an extended stable operating range while simplifying capacity control. IntraFlow™ eliminates the need for inlet guide vanes or mechanical variable geometry diffusers, allowing VTT compressors to offer both superior full-load and part-load performance and enabling chiller manufacturers to achieve the latest efficiency standards.

The compressors also feature an exclusive new drive technology, which is the result of integrated RD efforts blending Danfoss’ extensive expertise and capabilities in high-efficiency compressors and variable frequency drives for the HVACR industry. The VTT drive offers the superior reliability and performance that has come to be expected from Danfoss, in a small frame size made achievable only with refrigerant-controlled heat removal.

Because the compressors are oil free, end users experience lower maintenance costs associated with traditional systems that can suffer from repair chronic lubrication problems.

This marks the third and fourth times Danfoss Turbocor Compressors has been recognized in the AHR Expo Innovation Awards; it is the first time a Turbocor product has been named Product of the Year. In total, Danfoss has now been recognized 19 times over the past 12 years in the Innovation Awards program – more than any other HVACR manufacturer.

“We are honored by this prestigious industry recognition,” remarked Ricardo Schneider, president and CEO, Danfoss Turbocor Compressors. “As the pioneer and world leader in oil-free, variable speed, magnetic bearing compressor technology, Danfoss remains committed to innovative engineering that helps to shape the HVACR industry, redefines expectations for energy efficiency, and strives to meet future challenges and standards.”

The AHR Expo Innovation Awards recognize the most creative, effective, and ingenious HVACR products and technologies on the market. The annual competition is jointly sponsored by ASHRAE; the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI); and the International Exposition Company (IEC), producers and organizers of the AHR Expo. Winners are chosen in each of 10 product categories based on innovation, value, and impact on the market.
