DACs suit industrial control and automation applications.

Press Release Summary:

Offered in 3 x 3 mm package, 16-bit MAX5138 and 12-bit MAX5139 integrate voltage reference and are pin- and software-compatible. Power-down feature minimizes power consumption to 200 nA, while internal buffer optimizes load regulation and transition-glitch suppression for DAC output. Pin-programmable, zero/midscale DAC output ensures output powers up to desired state, even during loss-of-power event. Both converters accept 3-wire SPI(TM)-/QSPI(TM)-/MICROWIRE(TM)-/DSP-compatible serial interface.

Pin- and Software-Compatible DACs Reduce Design Time for Industrial Control and Automation Applications

Reduce design time with pin- and software-compatible, precision 16-/12-bit DACs.

SUNNYVALE, CA-May 18, 2009-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces pin- and software-compatible 16-bit (MAX5138) and 12-bit (MAX5139) precision DACs. Offered in a 3mm x 3mm package, these DACs integrate a high-precision voltage reference and provide exceptional linearity. Pin and software compatibility saves design time by allowing designers the capability to change resolution without redesigning the board or control software. This results in reduced time-to-market for the end product. This unmatched combination of performance and flexibility make the MAX5138/MAX5139 ideal for industrial process control and portable instrumentation applications, including communication systems, programmable logic controllers, servo loops, and automatic test equipment.

The MAX5138/MAX5139 offer better accuracy, higher integration, and a smaller package than competitive devices. The power-down feature reduces power consumption to just 200nA. An integrated voltage reference features a temperature coefficient of 10ppm/°C, while the internal buffer provides improved load regulation and transition-glitch suppression for the DAC output. A pin-programmable, zero/midscale DAC output ensures that the output powers up to the desired state, even during a loss-of-power event. This output provides additional safety for applications that drive valves or other transducers that need to be off during power-up.

These precision DACs accept a 3-wire SPI(TM)-/QSPI(TM)-/MICROWIRE(TM)-/DSP-compatible serial interface, which saves board space and reduces the complexity of optically isolated and transformer-isolated applications. To reduce the number of optocouplers in isolated applications, the serial interface features a READY output for easy daisy-chaining of multiple MAX5138/MAX5139 devices and/or other compatible devices.

The MAX5138/MAX5139 are also software compatible with the MAX5134-MAX5137 family of quad and dual, 16- and 12-bit DACs. Prices start at $3.39 for the MAX5138, and $1.60 for the MAX5139 (1000-up, FOB USA). Samples and evaluation kits are available.
