Dürr Continues with Energy Saving Initiatives

Dramatic Energy Savings Through Heat Storage Shutdown Mode

Plymouth, MI, October 1, 2009 - The Environmental and Energy Systems division of Dürr Systems has developed the Heat Storage Shutdown (HSS) mode which optimizes the energy savings from almost any off-production regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO). This is significantly more energy efficient than the set-back or idle mode because in each of these there still remains considerable burner and electrical demand.

The HSS mode enables the RTO fan and burner to be shut down while the unit stores its remaining heat energy in the combustion chamber and retains an elevated temperature from which to return to production ready status. Depending upon the amount of time the unit is off-line, the combustion temperature only diminishes 300-600°F below set-point so the RTO can rapidly be returned to production ready temperatures.

The return on investment from energy savings takes as little as three months from the HSS mode installation.

Dürr is a group of companies specializing in mechanical engineering and equipment manufacture and holds leading market positions in its global fields of activity. Automotive industry business accounts for around 85% of annual sales. In addition, Dürr supplies innovative production and environmental technology to the aircraft construction, mechanical engineering, chemicals and pharmaceutical industries. The Dürr Group serves the market with two corporate divisions. Paint and Assembly Systems provides production and painting technology, mainly as related to automotive bodywork. Measuring and Process Systems supplies machinery and equipment used, e.g., in engine and transmission manufacture and final vehicle assembly. Worldwide, Dürr maintains 44 sites in 20 countries. In 2008 the group generated sales of 1.6 billion with a staff of 6,100.
