S32cnc Combines Accuracy, Speed & Versatility

MIAMISBURG, OH - United Grinding Technologies, Inc. (UGT) announces the introduction of a new addition to its Studer line of high-performance external cylindrical grinders, the S32cnc.

The S32cnc is said to possess "chameleon-like" properties, in that it addresses a wide diversity of applications and can be "tailored" to match today's fluctuating production demands.

This is possible due to a number of unique capabilities: an X-axis which may be arranged for angular infeeding (wheel at 30°) or infeed grinding on the left or right (wheel at 0°). This permits the machine to process very basic, straightforward workpieces or highly complex ones. In the standard configuration, with the grinding wheel on the right and a between-centers distance of 400 mm, the S32cnc is perfectly suited for grinding small- to average-size cylindrical workpieces.

An optional C-axis permits ultra-precise form grinding routines for tooling (punches, for example) and thread grinding. Hydrostatic guideways on the X-axis permit extremely rapid traverse rates with minimal axis lag.

With the addition of diamond roll dressing and proven automated part loading/ unloading systems - plus in-process/post-process measurement and control - the S32cnc delivers superior productivity, untended or "lights-out" processing of long runs of single parts or part families, reduced non-grinding time and maximum machine/operator utilization.

Arranged for high-speed grinding - with cutting speeds in excess of 125 m/sec - the S32cnc takes on especially difficult-to-machine materials, such as zirconium ceramics or tungsten carbide, making them routine grinding candidates.

S32cnc overview

The S32cnc has a 175 mm center height and a maximum grinding length of 400 mm. Digital direct-drive X-axis features a travel of 300 mm at speeds to 15 m/sec and a linear measuring resolution of 0.0001 mm. Cast iron slide and cradle provide high vibration dampening and superior rigidity. Preloaded hydrostatic guideways ensure wear-free, stick-slip-free movement, highly accurate positioning and precise repeatability.

Digital direct-drive Z axis travel is 485 mm. Speed and linear resolution are the same as X axis. The prestressed rigid cast slide is hydrostatically guided for maximum precision, and V and flat path guides are coated with abrasion-proof Granitan S200. Nubbed guideways and continuous lubrication are also available.

The machine base of Studer-developed Granitan S103 delivers excellent vibration dampening, inherent rigidity and strength and excellent chemical stability and thermal compensation.

The spindle is powered by a 7.5 kW motor and has high-precision roller bearings for grinding between dead centers as well as live grinding with revolving spindle. Peripheral speed up to 50 m/sec with continuous speed control to 3200 RPM.

Precision control permits fine adjustmeent of cylindricity during grinding operations to +/ 40 µm.

Grinding wheel size: Ø500 mm x 80 mm x Ø203 mm. An additional high-precision axis behind the grinding wheel permits highly cost effective dressing with a 140 mm x 80 mm diamond roll.

Guaranteed tolerance precision: 0.0004 mm on roundness and 0.002 mm straightness deviation over a length of 400 mm.

Dressing

Wheel dressing intervals may be made by the operator following these simple methods: by pressing a pushbutton at any time during any grinding cycle; after a programmed number of specific machined parts or grinding operations; at programmed switchover points; at the programmed nominal size; after a specific number of strokes - or a combination of these, permitting the optimum solution for the specific grinding application.

Grinding wheel reference points are referred to as "T" numbers, and together with Studer grinding cycles, "T" numbers permit programming with nominal sizes. The actual value indication on the control LCD refers in each case to the programmed wheel reference point. Values of the grinding wheel shape are entered in a dressing dialog display at the control.

Control & programming

The S32cnc features state-of-the-art Fanuc 16i digital control and axis drive components. Machine operation, setup, changeover, dressing and programming of even complex parts are easily accomplished through the innovative, step-by-step Studer Pictogrammning which allows operators simply to connect grinding cycles to one another and add necessary numerical values. The control then generates the machine program automatically. Advanced manual programming in G code is of course also possible. Programming is done directly at the machine or off-line and then downloaded to the machine control. Process parameters can be changed on the fly, while the machine runs, without affecting the workpiece program.

The S32cnc control package features proven application-specific Studer grinding cycles for diameters, shoulders (left and right), tapers (negative and positive), contours, forms and threads. The Windows(TM) user-interface features integrated
on-line help menus and extensive fault/error diagnostics. Remote diagnostics, process control and trouble-shooting via standard telephone line and machine modem link are easily facilitated.

Form grinding options on the S32cnc include a heavy duty workhead with 4 kW spindle drive and a state-of-the-art Fanuc 160i control with Windows(TM) interface and special software package (for dies, punches, etc.).

Studer universal, external and internal grinders are supported by an expert team of grinding specialists and technicians drawing on more than 10,000 machine installations and a worldwide support and service network.
