Cutting Lasers suit materials processing applications.

Press Release Summary:

Matrix(TM) infrared (1.06 micron) Q switched lasers, available with choice of air cooling or closed-loop water cooling, deliver 10 W of average power. While 10 kHz model is suited for engraving materials that are problematic for CO2 lasers, 30 kHz version is designed for trimming active and passive circuit components in microelectronics. Also available, 350 kHz version offers less than 1% rms noise for precision, high-throughput applications.

Original Press Release:

New Generation of Q-Switched Lasers for Materials Processing Applications

Santa Clara, Calif., September 6, 2006 - The new Matrix(TM) family of lasers from Coherent, Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) (Nasdaq: COHR) combines the performance and reliability of solid-state lasers with several design and manufacturing innovations. These new features deliver an optimum solution for cost-effective volume OEM integration. The infrared (1.06 micron) Q switched lasers deliver 10 watts of average power with excellent beam quality (M2 = 1.1).

Several models of the Matrix offer repetition rates, RMS noise levels and costs targeted at specific applications segments. Among these are a 10 kHz model optimized for engraving plastics, metals and other materials that are problematic for carbon-dioxide lasers. A 30 kHz version is designed for trimming active and passive circuit components (resistors, crystals, etc.) in microelectronics. A 350 kHz version combines the high repetition rate and extremely low noise (<1% RMS) required for precision, high-throughput applications, such as memory repair and disk texturing.

These factory-sealed lasers are designed for integration within specialized tools and equipment by OEMs. This integration is simplified by the small footprint of the Matrix platform, the laser's low power requirements and a choice of air cooling or closed-loop water cooling. Expected lifetimes of the pump diodes are in the 20,000-hour range, based on the use of the company's AAA(TM) (Aluminum-free Active Area) diode material.

Founded in 1966, Coherent, Inc. is a Standard & Poor's SmallCap 600 company and a world leader in providing laser-based solutions to the commercial and scientific research markets.
