Customers Successfully Deploy EMC RecoverPoint for Heterogeneous Remote Replication and Continuous Data Protection

American Institute of Physics and Career Education Corporation Reduce Costs and Dramatically Improve Recovery Point Objectives Within Heterogeneous Environments

ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 30 -- Beginning today at Storage Networking World 2006, EMC Corporation, the world leader in information management and storage, will highlight two of many successful deployments of the EMC® RecoverPoint(TM) continuous remote replication (CRR) and continuous data protection (CDP) solution at the American Institute of Physics and Career Education Corporation. EMC RecoverPoint software is an integral part of EMC's recovery management portfolio, designed to help customers with heterogeneous environments achieve their recovery point and recovery time objectives. Please see related release announcing new and updated software to the portfolio: http://www.emc.com/news/emc_releases/showRelease.jsp?id=4694&l=en&c=US.

EMC RecoverPoint software, which is now based on technology EMC gained through the May 2006 acquisition of Kashya, is a heterogeneous data protection and recovery solution that runs on an out-of-band appliance or Cisco® MDS 9000 intelligent switch located in the network. It protects organizations from data loss due to common issues such as server failures, data corruption, software errors, viruses and end-user errors as well as from catastrophic events that can bring entire data centers to a standstill.

"EMC RecoverPoint software provides customers with the flexibility to leverage a network-resident architecture for advanced replication capabilities via cutting-edge CDP technology," said Brad O'Neill, Senior Analyst, Taneja Group. "The gains that enterprises will derive from continuous data solutions like RecoverPoint are going to be both significant and readily measurable. The economic, management, and protection flexibility resulting from this technology will transform how enterprises think about replication and recovery management in the coming years. This is a core enterprise technology and deserves attention."

Using integrated compression and WAN acceleration technology, RecoverPoint software can be quickly optimized for heterogeneous environments constrained by low bandwidth to a remote data center to significantly reduce costs. RecoverPoint software also includes application-specific data protection for Exchange, Oracle and SQL across heterogeneous storage arrays in the enterprise. It also supports enhanced disaster recovery and data protection capabilities for VMware® servers using raw device mapping for local and remote replication.

"As a content and service provider to a large subscriber base of scientists and academics worldwide, AIP has a serious commitment to making its information services continuously available. Downtime is not an option," said James Wonder, Director, Online Technology, American Institute of Physics, based in Melville, NY. "When we needed a simple, reliable and cost-effective remote replication solution that could snap into our existing heterogeneous environment, we chose EMC RecoverPoint software."

AIP's online services include more than 120 publications from 19 scientific societies and offer its users services that demand 24x7x365 availability. Today, RecoverPoint software plays an essential role in protecting AIP's data, both locally and at a secondary remote data center, so it can achieve rapid data recovery, independent of the cause of failure. As well, AIP can achieve uninterrupted operations by failing over to its secondary data center in order to perform maintenance at its primary production site, which sometimes requires a complete shutdown.

Career Education Corporation (CEC), based in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, is recognized globally for its family of premier educational institutions including the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts; Harrington College of Design; Brooks Institute of Photography; Katharine Gibbs Schools; American InterContinental University; Colorado Technical University and Sanford-Brown Institutes and Colleges. CEC is predominantly a Microsoft Windows environment and comprises one of the top 5 Microsoft Exchange deployments worldwide. CEC's IT organization manages more than 40TB of storage for its critical business applications in a growing data center consisting of multi-tiered EMC Symmetrix and EMC CLARiiON storage arrays. CEC relies on EMC RecoverPoint software for both continuous remote replication of data at its disaster recovery site as well as continuous data protection of its local data and applications.

"Our IT organization supports over 17,000 employees at our 80+ campuses and tens of thousands of students who need instantaneous access to their information. Our extremely large Microsoft Exchange platform and significantly large SQL databases that operate our key business applications serve our students and employees needs very well. While we take pride in maintaining a highly effective and reliable enterprise, our mandate is to ensure maximum availability and access to data and applications," said Chad Story, Enterprise Director of Infrastructure, Career Education Corporation. "Running EMC RecoverPoint software for both remote replication and local protection of data gives our organization a tremendous advantage to quickly get our users reconnected to information and applications in the event of data corruption or physical failure. EMC RecoverPoint software helps us keep our promise to the end user."

EMC RecoverPoint software is a comprehensive data protection solution providing both local CDP and continuous remote replication with CDP at the remote site. RecoverPoint software supports intelligent application bookmarks, instantaneous recovery and bi-directional local and remote replication to provide true any-point-in-time protection. Its unique clustered architecture provides linear scalability to support the most demanding environments. With support for heterogeneous storage, hosts, networks or SANs, RecoverPoint software protects storage investments, enhances business continuity and facilitates storage consolidation.

RecoverPoint software starts at US$83,000 and is available immediately through EMC and qualified EMC Velocity channel partners. For more information on EMC RecoverPoint software, please visit: http://software.emc.com/products/software_az/recoverpoint.htm.
