Custom Tow-Veyor Carts Designed for Use With Non-Contact Power Distribution System

(Niagara Falls, NY September 29, 2003) Handling Specialty custom tow-veyor carts not only move horizontally but also up and down vertically to meet the ergonomic and assembly needs of personnel along the production line. Engineered to meet the customer's requirements for a low-maintenance and safe tow-veyor system, the carts feature two electro-mechanical lifts with 2,500 lbs. capacity each. The front lift is used to hoist the front axle and engine assembly into the vehicle body while the back lift simultaneously inserts the rear axle. Synchronous lifting is essential since the front and rear modules are joined by a driveshaft.

A more maintenance-friendly alternative to past cart designs which included hydraulic lifts with pneumatic motors, the screw-actuated lifts on these carts are powered by a unique non-contact power distribution system (supplied by others). To prevent any disturbance of the power distribution, the side of the cart which passes over the power system is made of aluminum.

Onboard each cart is a programmable automatic control system for lift operation. The system allows the lifts to be moved synchronously or as independent units. To help decrease downtime and increase ease of maintenance, the installed controls are modular with pluggable connectors. Handling Specialty collaborated with another firm on the control system and integrated the controls with the carts prior to shipment to deliver a turnkey tow-veyor cart solution.

To meet the end user's safety requirements, the lift system engages only when all four operators depress their foot controls simultaneously. If any of the four should release their foot switch at any time, both lifts will stop. Under normal operation, the lifts return to their downstops position after a trip switch is triggered when the lift enters a "no operator" area. Should an issue arise, the operators have the option of lowering the lifts with an emergency override button. Other safety features include chamfered corners and skirts on the cart.
