DRC's Metrigraphics Announces Family of Micro-Induction Coils for Implanted and Traditional Medical Applications

NEW YORK, June 3 -- Dynamics Research Corporation's Metrigraphics Division (NASDAQ:DRCO), a world-leading precision manufacturer specializing in the fabrication of customized micro-components and micro-circuits, announced today a new family of micro-induction coils designed for use in implanted medical applications and traditional biomedical devices. The micro-induction coils are equipped with radio frequency signal transmission and signal and power induction capabilities, thereby eliminating the potential harmful effects to the human body posed by battery-operated implantable medical devices.

With over 160 coil variations prototyped, Metrigraphics offers customers the flexibility in process technology, substrate material, size, induction and tolerance ranges and functionality to meet the most rigorous technical specifications not fully addressed by other manufacturers. The new micro-induction coils are applicable for a variety of medical applications including miniature loop antennas for both active and passive implanted devices, biomedical microelectromechanical systems (BioMEMS) sensor units and neuro-stimulation devices.

Metrigraphics' new family of coils is classified by two groups -- single- and multiple-layer forms. Single layer multiple-turn electroformed coils are available in a variety of sizes, both in round and square configurations for ease of fit into specific applications. Multi-layer coils offer greater field density for more high-end applications. Based on Metrigraphics unmatched precision manufacturing technology, the new coils provide the following advantages over traditional offerings:

o The materials will not react with body fluids, thereby reducing any potentially harmful effects.

o The production process yields high volumes of coils per sheet produced.

o The induction coils permit passive devices, with power being obtained through induction only when required. This feature eliminates the need for internal batteries.

o The elimination of control and power wires being passed through the body.

The new micro-induction coils are also available in a variety of substrates. The coils are produced using electroformed nickel cobalt over-plated with pure gold, or with hard gold depending on the application. Coils can also be produced using copper. The process starts with a photolithographic image of the desired shape in photo resist, and then either electroplated for a thicker coil material, or sputtered for extremely fine coils. Individual traces can be fabricated as small as three microns, but more typically in the five- to ten-micron range, with metal thicknesses equal to the trace width. Aspect ratios of 2.5 to 1 are also being fabricated and higher ratios are possible. Current samples have been fabricated on glass for ease of handling, but other substrates are possible and include silicon, alumina, cast polyimide and other sheet materials for flexible coils.
