Cummins Turbo Technologies Showcases VG Patents at Automechanika

HUDDERSFIELD, England — Cummins Turbo Technologies will be showcasing a selection of the 70 patents it holds for its pioneering Variable Geometry (VG) technology at Automechanika (16 - 20 September 2014, Frankfurt).

The global engineering leader in turbocharger technology will be highlighting the HOLSET VGT™, a VG EURO 6 compliant turbocharger with 10 patents, designed for engines from 3 to 6 litres. As well as providing the wide flow range to allow higher boost pressures at low engine speeds that VG technology is known for, HOLSET VGT™ offers sliding nozzle technology, which is unique to Cummins Turbo Technologies.

Sliding nozzle technology enables the vanes that control boost pressure to slide axially rather than through swing-vane technology. With fewer moving parts as a result of the innovative sliding nozzle, the HOLSET VGT™ has 85% fewer wear sites than swing-vane products, improving durability and reliability, essential for today's commercial diesel applications and making Holset turbochargers a recommended first fit turbocharger for OEMs.

Working with 250 carefully selected Authorised Holset Distributors in over 140 countries worldwide, Cummins Turbo Technologies has more than 60 years of experience in the design and manufacture of intelligently applied, superior performance and high quality turbocharger technologies.

Erik Syrjanen - Genral Manager, Worldwide Aftermarket said: "With the move towards engine downsizing, fleet owners and vehicle manufacturers are increasingly relying on turbocharging technology to achieve emissions standards without compromising on performance or durability. Although downtime is a prime consideration, it is vital that fleet owners assess the specification of replacement turbochargers to ensure they meet their long term needs - helping to reduce emissions, remain robust throughout its lifecycle and provide optimum performance.

"There are a lot of counterfeiters offering replacement turbochargers so fleet owners need to be wary when making a decision on their replacement parts that they will achieve these essential requirements.

"Our long standing engineering excellence in developing highly skilled solutions and technologies mean that we are the first choice for global OEMs. We are continuing to invest in the technologies of the future to meet next generation challenges and to create other solutions that can be tailored according to the demands of vehicle duty cycles and market regulation."

Cummins Turbo Technologies launched its first VG turbocharger in 1998 and carries out extensive testing at its site in Huddersfield, UK, to ensure its solutions reach the highest levels of performance, quality, and safety. The flexible design of the HOLSET VGT™ means that it can be tailored to meet the diverse duty cycles demanded by global vehicle manufacturers.

Compact turbochargers are becoming increasingly desirable, with predicted worldwide growth of 12 per cent per annum. Their availability from Cummins Turbo Technologies will support the business' development and expand on its current market-leading position in the design and manufacture of turbochargers for the commercial diesel engine sector.
