Pericom Introduces Industry First Family of ASSP Crystal Oscillators (ASSP-XO(TM)) for High-Growth Markets
ASSP XO solutions combine best performance, price and delivery for targeted applications in networking, storage, ultra mobility, and digital media markets
San Jose, CA - Pericom Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: PSEM) a worldwide preferred supplier of products for timing, signal conditioning and serial connectivity, today announced production availability of an industry-first family of Application Specific Standard Product Crystal Oscillators (ASSP-XO(TM)) for frequencies ranging from 2MHz to 159MHz. This product family offers a new paradigm in crystal oscillators by addressing the application requirements with the best performance, ready availability while offering the most cost-effective price points.
Pericom's new family of ASSP XO's address specific reference clock frequencies for popular serial connectivity standards, with low jitter and power, and in the technology optimized for that specific application. The new XO family eliminates critical trade-offs between performance, delivery times and cost when selecting and qualifying oscillators in a new design, especially for fast TTM (Time To Market) projects. By offering the most popular frequencies as an 'off the shelf' product, Pericom can reduce design cycle time with best of class performance.
"Pericom is first to introduce the concept of ASSP for crystal oscillators used in high growth market segments, enabling customers to quickly design with the best solution," said Kay Annamalai, Pericom's senior director of marketing for timing products. "We combine our patented design expertise, vertical integration within our own factory, and key chipset partner reference designs to provide a unique value proposition that goes beyond existing solutions."
ASSP XO solutions address the fast growing markets of Networking, Storage, Ultra Mobility, Digital Media and Security. Within networking, up to 15.1Mu 10GbE ports will be shipped in 2012 (Dell'Oro, July'08), and EPON ports will increase from 4Mu in 2007 to 13.2Mu in 2012 (Linley Market Research Group, 2008). Within Storage, enterprise hard disk drive shipments in terabytes will increase from 32Mu in 2009 to 140Mu in 2012 (IDC Feb'09), and within Ultra Mobility, smart phones have shown a 23.7% growth from 2008 to 2009 (Gartner, Feb '10).
The new ASSP XO family uses patented Pericom XP clock circuit technology for 150MHz and above, to provide added reliability compared to overtone solutions. In addition, the oscillators use BAW (Bulk Acoustic Wave) crystal devices that offer better stability as compared to SAW or MEMS based designs. This tight stability is important for applications such as WiFi. With phase jitter <0.5ps, the ASSP XO family provides the lowest jitter for high speed applications, and also offers power consumption as low as 2.0mA.
