Original Press Release:

EM Microelectronic's New 32 kHz Crystal Oscillator Boasts High Accuracy with Outstanding Voltage Operating Range

EM1564 combines excellent stability with very low power consumption in very small SMD ceramic package

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado - February 21, 2006 - EM Microelectronic, an electronic systems company of the Swatch Group, introduces the EM1564, a new 32 kHz crystal oscillator. This ultra-low power circuit integrates a 32.768 kHz tuning fork crystal and an advanced CMOS circuit assembled in a specifically designed package. The EM1564 combines excellent oscillator stability and very low power consumption with an outstanding voltage operating range from 1.2V to 5.5V. With a standard temperature range between -40°C to +85°C, the device is also available for an extended temperature range up to +125°C.

The EM1564 is yet another result of the joint effort of Micro Crystal and EM Microelectronic, two companies of the Swatch Group Electronic Systems (SGES). The product demonstrates how this group takes advantage of the synergies arising from the technological, cultural and geographical proximity of its companies.

The EM1564 package can replace standard quartz as a solution to limitations of miniaturization. It is also a convenient solution when application difficulties arise with quartz or on-chip embedded oscillators. "EM Microelectronic's solution offers top performance in temperature range and miniaturization," says Mougahed Darwish, president of the management board of EM Microelectronic. "Furthermore, the EM1564 offers the widest voltage range."

The EM1564's primary application is a general purpose crystal oscillator in digital systems. It is especially well-suited for various metering and automotive applications, such as a dashboard. It can also be used as a clock driver - timekeeping in networked servers and computers, in data logger systems, mobile phone or GPS applications.

The device is also sold to component manufacturers as an input clock driver or as an add-on circuit for all types of microcontrollers that can be driven using an external clock.

The EM1564 is unique in combining the following features:

o Quartz and IC assembled in the same very small SMD package

o High accuracy - frequency trimming in factory

o Low power with typically 300nA from 1.2V to 5.5V

o Extended temperature range from -40°C to +125°C

o High driver capability of the 32.768 kHz output - can replace several quartzes

o Output Enabled

Availability

The EM1564 crystal oscillator package is available in a 10-pin package from EM Microelectronic and its authorized distributors. More information about this circuit is available at www.emmicroelectronic.com/Line.asp?IdLine=39.
