Landis LT2 Twin Wheelhead Flexible CNC Crankshaft Grinder Is Benchmark for Accuracy and Flexibility
Machine tooled for production grinding process displayed at IMTS
Chicago, Ill., Sept. 8, 2004 - Landis Grinding Systems is displaying its innovative LT2 Twin Wheelhead orbital crankpin grinder at IMTS in booth A-8101. At IMTS, the LT2 Twin Wheelhead grinder is programmed for finish grinding six crankpin journal diameters by simultaneous left-hand and right-hand dedicated CBN grinding wheels.
The LT2 grinder's CNC controlled wheel feed permits pins to be precision ground with the crankshaft rotating about the centerline of the main bearing journals. The wheel precisely follows the orbit of each pin about the main journal axis. The LT2 Twin Wheelhead provides an important advantage for controlling critical roundness in grinding crankshaft pin journals. For most crankpin grinding applications, the shaft is supported and driven from the main journal axis, which is directly correlated to the shaft's operation in the engine.
The LT2 grinder's two independently programmable wheelheads can be tooled with CBN grinding wheels to perform several different processing methods:
o Finish grind two main journal diameters simultaneously
o Finish grind two crankpin journal diameters simultaneously
o Finish grind main and crankpin journal diameters in a combined operation
o Finish grind other concentric diameters and thrustwalls by various sequencing of twin wheelheads
This capability allows tremendous flexibility in developing highly productive processes. In certain applications, it is possible to grind all of the concentric and non-concentric diameters on a crankshaft with only one fixturing using different width wheels on the separate wheelheads as necessary.
The highly productive LT2 Twin Wheelhead grinder provides the flexibility needed in today's global automotive manufacturing industry by allowing multiple operations to be combined in a single grinder, thereby minimizing the number of machines and reducing capital expenditure. For example, by grinding both crankshaft concentric main journals and eccentric pin diameters on a Landis LT2 Twin Wheelhead grinder, a typical 5-machine process can be reduced to only two grinders.
Features of the LT2 Twin Wheelhead grinder include: hydrostatic ways on the X-axes for high stiffness and improved contour accuracy; a wear-free permanent magnet linear motor wheelfeed drive system for faster workspeeds and improved part quality; a hydrostatic wheel spindle that improves finishes and provides consistent maintenance-free accuracy; a motorized headstock drive; a motorized spindle dresser for precision wheel truing and wheel profiling capability; and a state-of-the-art open architecture PC-based CNC control.
