Original Press Release:

New Rectus Couplings Bring Simplicity and Security for Medical and Biotechnology Devices

Rectus, now part of the Quick Coupling Division of Parker Hannifin, the global leader in motion and control technologies has launched two new connector products for the medical technology market. Designed for use with gases and liquids, the most notable innovation in the Rectus PPL and PPM ranges is the ergonomic design. An integrated unlocking thumb key on the coupling, allows the connection to be made and released easily, safely and quickly with one hand, even with surgical gloves. A shut-off valve provides additional safety in the coupling process and includes audible detection.

When inserted, the plug automatically locks with a clearly audible "click" indicating that the connection is engaged. To disconnect, simply press the thumb key. The connectors are manufactured using welding technology which ensures the elimination of potential leaks.

Produced in high quality USP class VI polyoxymethylene, the couplings not only meet the strict hygiene and technical safety requirements of the medical industry, but also stand out for their resistance to caustic and acid solutions and the ability to work at pressures up to 8 bar in temperatures between -40°C and +82°C. The Buna-N seals with FDA authorisation also demonstrate a high level of chemical compatibility and are easily replaceable. Even the springs and locking clip in rust-proof stainless steel show no cytotoxic effect and have a low level of wear.

With the trend towards increasingly compact equipment the new range is available in nominal diameters of 3 mm (PPM) and 6 mm (PPL) and has above average flow rate with a limited space requirement due to its design and light weight. The plug with a 90° angle design ensures space saving hose routing for the equipment and thus reduces the space requirement still further.

The new couplings, which are available in numerous different connection types and sizes, are typically used in point-of-care applications such as endoscopy and arthroscopy, all types of medication line or rinsing solution, camera connections for anti-decubitus beds, hose sets for bypass operations or wound drains, and special suction devices. The couplings can be sterilised with normal chemical procedures and are therefore reusable.

The couplings are compatible with other thermoplastic couplings with thumb keys that are available on the market and all the materials used are FDA and NSF compliant. An additional "safety factor" is the material traceability provided by the material manufacturer's certificate enclosed with every delivery from Parker Rectus.
