New CPC Steam-Through Couplings Could Revolutionize Steam-In-Place Process

ST. PAUL, MN, March 15, 2002 - Steam-in-place (SIP) has just gotten faster, easier and cleaner following the introduction of the industry's first line of "steam-through" couplings by Colder Products Company (CPC).

According to CPC's Sean Burke, the new SIP couplings change the very process of SIP, which in the past, required complex connections that made systems vulnerable. "By passing the steam directly through the coupling, we've changed everything," said Burke. "This is truly safe, one-step SIP."

The safety and simplicity results from eliminating the unnecessary connection points and "dead legs" associated with traditional SIP. "CPC engineers have eliminated the traditional 'rat's nest' of plumbing," said Burke, "and made it as simple as connecting points A and B. By eliminating the unnecessary connection points, we've reduced the chances of contamination and dramatically reduced validation concerns. In addition, we've also increased throughput, which is another nice feature."

The new steam-through SIP couplings, which were introduced at the recent INTEPHEX show in New York, are disposable, built from materials already widely used in the industry, and feature an intuitive, easy-to-use design. They work with existing systems, which means no retrofitting is required to upgrade, and are available through existing bag manufacturers.

"This really an exciting breakthrough,"' said Burke. "We've made the flexible bag much more flexible. Not only have we made connecting the bag to the bioreactors simpler, we've made it more cost-effective, as well."

CPC's quality system is ISO 9001-certified and CPC couplings have a worldwide reputation for repeatable, leak-free connections.
