Corning Cable Systems to Highlight Innovation in LAN and Data Center Applications at BICSI 2009 Spring Conference and Exhibition

MAY 7, 2009

HICKORY, N.C. Corning Cable Systems LLC, part of Corning Incorporated's (NYSE:GLW) Telecommunications segment, will feature its innovative local area network (LAN) and data center solutions at the BICSI 2009 Spring Conference and Exhibition, May 10-13, in Baltimore.

In its interactive exhibit (booth #115), Corning Cable Systems will showcase its Plug & Play(TM) Universal Systems, a preterminated optical fiber cabling system that streamlines the process of deploying an optical network infrastructure in the data center environment. Corning Cable Systems Plug & Play Universal Systems are 100G ready and capable of reliably supporting transmission speeds up to 100G with laser-optimized 50 µm multimode fiber (OM3).

The exhibit will also feature Corning Cable Systems Pretium® Low-loss OM3 Jumpers with ultra-bend performance. Enabled by Corning® ClearCurve® OM3 multimode fiber, the jumpers greatly reduce outages and degradation in systems caused by severe bending problems. As network transmission speeds increase, available margins tighten and become more sensitive to loss associated with a number of factors including bends. Attenuation loss impacts associated with inadvertent macro-bending events may be reduced by more than 50 percent when using Pretium Low-loss OM3 Jumpers with ultra-bend performance in place of traditional 50 µm jumpers.

The exhibit will also contain:

o Corning Cable Systems' MIC® DX Armored Cable, an all-dielectric armored fiber optic cable design that eliminates the labor and costs associated with accessing and grounding a typical armored cable.

o UniCam® Pretium-Performance Connectors, which offer an industry-leading optical performance in a fast, easy field-termination solution.

o OV-1000 Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), a rugged OTDR with field-interchangeable multimode, single-mode and advanced testing modules, which can be switched out in the field without tools in a matter of seconds.

o OptiSplice® CDS Fusion Splicer, offering a video-camera-based, core-alignment technology known as the core detection system (CDS), is an ideal machine for networks where low-loss performance is imperative.

o OTS-600 series tester with data storage capabilities, ideal for optical network certification, is designed with ease of use as the top priority, while maintaining all the functionality one expects from an optical tester.

In addition to the interactive exhibit, Corning's Doug Coleman, manager of technology and standards, will present "Optical Trends in the Data Center" on Wednesday, May 13, at 8:30 a.m. This presentation will review optical trends and the benefits of optical connectivity versus copper, as well as provide guidance on emerging Ethernet, Fibre Channel and InfiniBand standards that will use parallel optics with OM3 fiber.
