Coordinate Measuring Machine offers 0.3 micron accuracy.

Press Release Summary:

Employing stiff, closed-frame structure with moving table, Leitz PMM-C Infinity provides repeatability of 0.1 micron. Machine uses LSP-S4 3D scanning probe for precise form and profile measurements. With probing force of 0.5-0.16 N, Model LSP-S4 allows use of small diameter probing styli or probing of soft or delicate materials without damage. Glass ceramic scales provide 4 nm resolution, while servo drives with recirculating ball-screws achieve positioning accuracy of ±50 nm.

Hexagon Metrology features LEITZ Infinity-Class PMM-C at IMTS

Most Accurate Leitz Ever

Hexagon Metrology Inc. will introduce the next version of its legendary Leitz PMM-C CMM at IMTS 2006. The Infinity-class PMM-C is the most accurate machine that Leitz has ever produced, with a stunning accuracy specification of 0.3 microns and repeatability of just 0.1 micron (to achieve these results, a controlled temperature of 20°C must be maintained).

To create this ultra high accuracy version of the PMM, the latest technical advancements were incorporated into the PMM's proven mechanical platform.

The Leitz PMM-C Infinity employs an extremely stiff closed-frame structure with a moving table. Using the Leitz LSP-S4 3D scanning probe for very precise form and profile measurements, each probing point is measured normal to the surface of the part. The LSP-S4 uses very low probing force of just 0.5 to 0.16 N, allowing the use of very small diameter probing styli or the probing of soft or delicate materials without damage. With its extremely high stiffness, precise measurement is possible even with very long extensions, up to 800mm in length and 1 kg in weight.

The new PMM-C Infinity Coordinate Measuring Machine is equipped with high-resolution glass ceramic scales with a resolution of 4 nanometers. Redesigned drive components ensure even greater isolation of the drive forces from the moving mass. Innovative Servo drives with recirculating ball-screws achieve high positioning accuracy of ±50 Nanometers and high positional stability with high acceleration.

The PMM-C Infinity will be shown via a DVD presentation at IMTS (an actual machine is being installed at Hexagon Metrology's new Headquarters building in North Kingstown, RI) The PMM-C Infinity is suited for the most ultra-precise applications such as ground lenses, precision gears, aerospace, powertrain and other highly dimensionally sensitive parts.
