Cooling Technology Helps Meet Emissions Regulations, Reduces Operating Costs with Lower Noise and No Maintenance

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., May 9 -- BorgWarner Thermal Systems' innovative Cool Logic® fan drives combine BorgWarner's wet friction and electronic controls technology to effectively cool today's cleaner, but hotter diesel engines with the added advantages of lower noise, reduced operating costs and no maintenance. The system is currently under production for several North American heavy-duty truck OEMs.

"The industry's efforts to meet stringent diesel emissions standards have led heavy-duty truck makers to design cleaner, more fuel efficient engines. However, these new engine technologies generate up to 30% more heat rejection, which cannot be effectively cooled by current technologies," said Alfred Weber, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Thermal Systems. "BorgWarner's Cool Logic technology is a smart solution that delivers effective and efficient cooling while lowering operating costs for fleet owners."

The patented Cool Logic technology was inspired by the wet friction
expertise developed by BorgWarner Transmission Systems for passenger car transmissions. The vehicle's engine control module (ECM) drives the variable speed Cool Logic fan drive to precisely control temperature, allowing the cooling system to operate at peak performance under all conditions, rather than simply turning on and off. The innovation increases cooling system capacity up to 25%, reduces fan power up to 50%, and cuts overnight idling fuel consumption by up to 75%. The Cool Logic fan drive reduces operating costs by extending the life of the entire cooling system, including the radiator, charge air cooler and pulley belts, all with the added advantages of lower noise and no maintenance.

BorgWarner has built a new production line at its facility in Cadillac,Michigan, to meet the current and growing demand for this new coolingtechnology.

The economical choice for efficiency, performance and quiet operation,BorgWarner Thermal Systems offers the latest in cooling innovations for improved fuel economy and longer engine life.
