Liebert Introduces Product Family for Supplemental Cooling of High Density Computer Systems

Efficient, Flexible And Scalable Solution To Growing Problem of Data Center Hot Spots

CHICAGO, IL, January 28, 2003 - Liebert' Corporation (www.liebert.com) today introduced the Liebert XD" family of cooling solutions at the International Air Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating (AHR) Expo in Chicago. The Liebert XD family is the first comprehensive solution to the data center cooling challenge being created by the new generation of high density computer and communications equipment.

Products include a rack-mounted air-flow enhancer (Liebert XDA), and water-free ceiling- and rack-mounted cooling systems (Liebert XDV and Liebert XDO) that deliver efficient, high-capacity, supplemental cooling without consuming valuable data center floor space.

"The power densities of computer systems have risen to levels that exceed the capacity of traditional approaches to cooling and that is creating hot spots in the data center that can reduce the availability of business critical systems," said Fred Stack, vice president of marketing for Liebert. "With these products, we've revolutionized data center cooling by enabling focused, high efficiency cooling of densities up to 500 watts per square foot."

The Liebert XD family delivers high-efficiency cooling by bringing the cooling components close to the source of heat and through the use of a special Liebert XD coolant system. The coolant is a gas at atmospheric pressure, but is pumped as a liquid to the Liebert XDO or XDV where it vaporizes to a gas while absorbing the heat energy of the air. It is then returned to the pumping station where it is re-condensed to liquid. The fluid phase change greatly enhances the system's efficiency, and eliminates the possibility of damage or electrical hazard from liquid in the event of a leak since it would emit only an environmentally friendly "green" gas.

The key products in the Liebert XD family include:

Liebert XDA Air Flow Enhancer
The Liebert XDA Air Flow Enhancer is a lightweight fan unit that mounts to the rear of a 60-inch or higher rack enclosure. Powerful fans pull hot air out of the enclosure, through the cabling obstructions. Once the air is diverted to the "hot" aisle, Liebert floor units can then properly disperse the heated air. The Liebert XDA contains dual cords and five independent fans to ensure high reliability for critical equipment applications.

Liebert XDV Vertical Rack-Mounted Fan Coil
The Liebert XDV is a vertical fan coil that mounts to the top of the rack. It features a waterless coolant system. The unit draws hot air directly out of the rack or from the hot aisle and exhausts cold air into the cold aisle where equipment air intakes are located.

Liebert XDO Overhead Fan Coil
The Liebert XDO is an overhead, ceiling-mounted fan coil that delivers efficient cooling by drawing hot air into side-mounted coils and exhausting cool air vertically down into the cold aisle. It also utilizes a waterless coolant system.

The Liebert XDV and XDO systems are supported by the Liebert XDP pumping unit or XDC chiller. The XDP unit circulates and controls the XD coolant to the XDO or XDV units and also serves as the intermediary between the building chilled water loop and the XD coolant loop. The Liebert XDC chiller is an indoor chiller that connects directly to the Liebert XDO or XDV and provides XD coolant circulation and control. Both units ensure the coolant is always above the dew point in the room, eliminating concern for damage or electrical hazard created by condensation.

Liebert XD systems are designed to supplement traditional cooling systems, such as Liebert's Deluxe System/3, which provides base cooling, humidification and air filtration control for the data center.
