Converting USB Stick Data to FAT File Format with dataTaker Loggers

From CAS DataLoggers, the North American Master Distributor for dataTaker

CHESTERLAND OH — Until relatively recently, USB memory sticks typically used FAT32 file format, but by and large this is no longer the case. This can occasionally cause an issue when using a datalogger with a USB port. Consequently, as part of our free technical support, we at CAS DataLoggers often suggest to dataTaker data logger users that they reformat their data to FAT32 (File allocation table) format.

For example, 8GB Flash drives currently use the newer NTFS format (NT File System). NTFS is now the preferred Microsoft Windows NT file system (Win2000/XP/Vista/Win7) and can format files of any size using file compression. In contrast, the FAT format has a 4GB limit for each individual file. Therefore when using USB sticks over 4GB, dataTaker users can simply reformat the data to FAT.

Naturally USB sticks of 4GB or under are ideal for faster formatting—in fact the dataTaker will auto-format them to FAT16 or FAT32 file types. Just right-click and choose the one you want.

Designed for a wide variety of applications to capture many different measurement types, the Series 3 dataTakers provides an extensive array of communications features making it an ideal solution for real-time data acquisition, remote monitoring and control needs.

With their universal analog channels, dataTaker dataloggers can log and scale almost any physical value including temperature, voltage, current, 4-20mA loops, resistance, strain gauges, frequency, and more. Our Series 3 dataTakers include the DT80, DT85 for applications with a higher channel count, the environmental E series, the G series of geotechnical loggers, the industrial I series, and the modem-equipped M series. Our dataTakers are ready for duty in environmental, industrial and many other types of monitoring projects.

Their powerful communications capabilities include RS232 with modem support, Ethernet and USB memory stick ports enabling connection to the logger locally, remotely or over the Internet. The data
