Converters feature software-programmable output ranges.

Press Release Summary:

SoftSpan(TM) 12-bit LTC1588 and 14-bit LTC1589 are current-output DACs, programmed with 3-wire serial interface to operate in any one of 6 output ranges. All output spans have specifications of ±1LSB INL and ±1LSB DNL. Units require 5 V reference, dual op amp, and feedback capacitor. They have 2 nV-s glitch impulse, ensuring low distortion in digital waveform generation. Asynchronous clear pin resets devices to 0 V output regardless of output range selected.

12- & 14-Bit SoftSpan DACs Feature Software Programmable Output Ranges & Simplified System Design

MILPITAS, CA - July 16, 2003 - Linear Technology introduces the LTC1588 and LTC1589, the first 12- and 14-bit current output DACs with a software programmable output range. The SoftSpan(TM) DACs are easily programmed with a 3-wire serial interface to operate in any one of six possible output ranges: two unipolar (0V to 5V, 0V to 10V) and four bipolar (±2.5V, ±5V, ±10V and -2.5V to 7.5V). All output spans have ultra-precise specifications of ±1LSB INL, ±1LSB DNL and excellent gain specifications over the industrial temperature range. The LTC1588 and LTC1589 are pin compatible with the LTC1592 16-bit SoftSpan DAC, providing an easy upgrade path for users wishing to increase resolution.

Designers no longer need precision resistors, switches and external amplifiers for range switching. Fewer components means easier and faster design, which ensures faster product delivery to market. A single board design can serve several applications, such as instrumentation and data acquisition, without requiring jumpers for different versions of the board. The only external components needed to get the SoftSpan DAC up and running are a precision 5V reference, a dual op amp and a feedback capacitor.

The LTC1588 and LTC1589 have ultra-low 2nV-s glitch impulse, ensuring low distortion in digital waveform generation and reducing overshoot in industrial process control and optical switches and filters for communications applications. The asynchronous clear pin always resets the devices to zero volts output regardless of the output range selected.

The LTC1588 and LTC1589 are available in a 16-pin SSOP package over both commercial and industrial temperature ranges. Pricing starts at $5.95 each for the LTC1588 and $9.95 each for the LTC1589 in 1,000-piece quantities.
