Low Cost 16-Bit Delta Sigma ADC Features Automatic Channel Selection Between Two Fully Differential Input Pairs

MILPITAS, CA - April 4, 2003 - Linear Technology introduces the LTC2436-1, a 16-bit No Latency Delta Sigma(TM) ADC that offers two fully differential input channels and a differential reference input at a low price. The ADC's low noise (800nVRMS) allows 16-bit performance with full-scale ranges from ±2.5V down to ±50mV without a PGA. The No Latency Delta Sigma architecture ensures single cycle digital filter settling even after a change in channels or input voltage step. Transparent auto calibration, on every conversion, ensures stable output codes with a total unadjusted error of 3LSBMAX independent of time, temperature, and supply. Operating from a single 2.7V to 5.5V supply, the LTC2436-1 consumes only 200uA of supply current benefiting portable or loop powered application.

The LTC2436-1 can accept two differential inputs, which are converted alternately without being programmed. The full-scale input spans -0.5VREF to 0.5VREF where the reference voltage can be anywhere between 0.1V and VCC for flexible ratiometric and remote sensing configurations. Since the noise performance is independent of VREF, input resolution increases by simply lowering the reference voltage. Low level input signals (±50mV) applied to the LTC2436-1 operating with a 100mV reference achieve 16-Bit resolution. An on-chip oscillator provides a simultaneous 50Hz and 60Hz filter, eliminating costly external components. An external clock source can be use for rejection of frequencies other than 50Hz or 60Hz and the converter will adapt automatically.

The LTC2436-1 communicates through a 3-wire digital interface, which is compatible with the SPI protocol. The device is available in a 16-pin SSOP package, screened for industrial and commercial temperature ranges. Pricing starts at $2.45 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
