Redpine Signals Announces Its Lite-NMAX(TM) Ultra Low Power 802.11n Wi-Fi® + 802.16e Mobile WiMAX® Convergence Solution for Mobile Devices

Redpine's convergence SoC solution meets cost and size of today's 802.11n Wi-Fi SoC solutions

BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 11 -- GSMA Mobile World Congress -- Redpine Signals, Inc., a leading developer of ultra low power multi-standard OFDM and MIMO silicon-based solutions, today announced the introduction of its Lite-NMAX(TM) product -- the industry's first ultra low power wireless convergence SoC incorporating 802.11n Wi-Fi(R) and 802.16e Mobile WiMAX subscriber solutions. Lite-NMAX(TM) provides all features of a two-stream MIMO 802.11n Draft 3.0 client as well as all Mobile WiMAX(R) Wave 2 features in a MIMO enabled subscriber unit in a single, highly optimized silicon product.

"Six years of research and a significant patent portfolio have gone into the implementation of Lite-NMAX(TM)," said Venkat Mattela, Redpine's Chief Executive Officer. "We have used our patented techniques of silicon optimization and converged implementation of multiple wireless standards to achieve a silicon size that is comparable to other single standard solutions. Emerging applications require mobile devices to have high speed wireless data connectivity at all times -- a requirement that is not fulfilled by today's products. Wi-Fi and WiMAX networks complement each other in rate, range, mobility and coverage," said Mr. Mattela.

Lite-NMAX(TM) is built on Redpine's proprietary ultra low power multi-threaded processor architecture that not only provides a unique degree of protocol handling within the silicon but also provides a power-efficient offload of some critical layer-3 functionality. Functionality within the device is optimally partitioned and implemented in hardware and multiple levels of firmware, and allows a seamless switch-over between 802.11n and 802.16e.

Lite-NMAX(TM) is fully compliant to Mobile WiMAX Wave 2 profiles, including downlink MIMO, HARQ, CTC and beamforming with uplink sounding. It is an interference-optimal design with innovative signal processing for best throughputs in dense single-frequency network deployments. In 802.11n mode, Lite-NMAX(TM) provides a 300 Mbps two-stream MIMO downlink with all mandatory and optional features of the Draft 3.0 standard including STBC and beamforming support for longer range, and a power-optimal single-stream transmitter ideal for handheld devices. Lite-NMAX(TM) offers industry leading wireless multipath performance, pioneered in Redpine's Lite-Fi(TM) product family, providing robust connectivity and maximizing over-the-air throughput in adverse environments. In addition, the device employs Redpine's proprietary and patent-pending Maximum Likelihood MIMO decoder to obtain optimum performance in the multi-stream modes of 11n and 16e under all operational scenarios.

Redpine is showcasing Lite-NMAX to the market together with Infineon's RF transceiver, the SMARTi(TM) WiMAX PMB2008. Redpine and Infineon have worked closely to combine their respective RF and baseband products into a Wi-Fi + WiMAX convergence solution that is exceptionally well suited for high volume mobile connectivity deployment.
