New Telemecanique® Preventa(TM) XPSMC Controller Performs Functions of 20 Safety Relays

Controller significantly reduces power consumption, panel space and wiring costs

PALATINE, Ill. - OCTOBER 3, 2005 - An alternative to multiple safety relays that take up panel space is the new compact Telemecanique® Preventa(TM) XPSMC safety controller from Schneider Electric. It can perform the various functions of up to 20 different safety relays and provide real-time status and diagnostics of the machine control system.

"The Preventa safety controller provides users with a flexible solution for monitoring all the different tasks of safety applications in one device," says David Collins, product staff specialist, Schneider Electric. "The savings over conventional safety systems are significant: up to 80 percent in power consumption, 68 percent less panel space required, and 75 percent fewer wire terminations."

The safety controller has an extensive library of certified safety functions for applications that must conform to Category 4 of standard EN 954-1. Other important features of the Preventa XPSMC safety controller include:

User-friendly configuration software. Users can develop safety applications by configuring the predefined and certified safety functions built into the controller. The XPSMCWIN configuration software features drag-and-drop techniques, so users do not have to learn complicated programming software.

Diagnostics. Detailed diagnostics provide an in-depth overview of the status of inputs and outputs, and identify any faults and their causes. These diagnostics can be viewed by a PC connected to the controller, or through a PLC, or the Telemecanique Magelis® human-machine interface.

Distributed safety. Multiple controllers can be used to provide a distributed safety solution and cost savings over using a safety PLC. The controllers can also be connected to standard PLCs for diagnostics and other information-gathering applications.

Simple modification. Last-minute changes are easy to implement without the need to find space in the panel for additional safety relays.

Less stock to carry. The controller has all safety functions built in, resulting in the need to carry fewer individual safety relays.

The Preventa XPSMC safety controller is available with either 16 inputs or 32 inputs. They are also available in starter packs, which contain a safety controller, configuration software, screw- and spring-clamp terminals, configuration cable and adapter - providing everything needed for a complete installation.
