Adept Technology to Introduce and Showcase Distributed Motion Control Platform at Robot and Vision Show

New Control System To Reduce Cost of Integrating High Performance Multi-axis Motion Control and Vision

Livermore, California - May 27, 2003 - Adept Technology, Inc. (OTCBB: ADTK.OB), a leading manufacturer of flexible automation for the semiconductor, electronics, fiber optic, telecommunications, and life sciences industries, today announced the release of the Adept SmartMotion system. Based on the Adept SmartServo architecture, the Adept SmartMotion system controls industrial robots and other high performance multi-axis servo devices, and is designed to reduce the costs of motion control. The new system will be showcased at Adept's booth #429 at the Robot and Vision show June 3-5, 2003 in Rosemont, Illinois.

"Adept SmartMotion further extends our position as the world's leading supplier of robotic motion control systems," said Charlie Duncheon, executive vice president for Adept Technology. "By leveraging consumer electronic technology we have reduced our overall costs substantially and cut our base list price by more than half. This price reduction combined with our advanced motion control capability and distributed architecture will now allow our customers to significantly reduce the total cost of implementation."

An extensive library of kinematics solutions and motion algorithms makes Adept SmartMotion the most comprehensive robot and mechanism controller in the industry. By leveraging distributed processing power, our customers are achieving unprecedented improvements in cycle time and positional accuracy while reducing costs. Together with the tightly integrated AdeptVision sAVI(TM) Guidance option, the Adept SmartMotion(TM) system can address the most demanding motion control applications.

Several advanced servo-control features such as linear and backlash compensation, orthogonality compensation, split-axis drive and adaptive servoing are available. These features can be used to improve the positional accuracy and performance of off-the-shelf mechanical components, further reducing overall system costs.

The new Adept SmartMotion System and Adept SmartServo architecture use a FireWire®-based (IEEE-1394) high-speed control bus, which replaces hundreds of wires and connections with a single cable, reduces costs, increases reliability and simplifies installation. Additionally, FireWire connectivity to the PC lays the groundwork for real-time open architecture controls while maintaining the reliability and safety required in industrial environments.

Adept Technology designs, manufactures and markets factory automation components and systems for the fiber optic, telecommunications, semiconductor, automotive, food and durable goods industries throughout the world. Adept's robots, controllers, and software products are used for small parts assembly, material handling and ultra precision process applications. Our intelligent automation product lines include industrial robots, configurable linear modules, flexible feeders, semiconductor process components, nanopositioners, machine controllers for robot mechanisms and other flexible automation equipment, machine vision, systems and software, application software, and simulation software.
