Rockwell Automation Introduces New Control Capabilities for Paper Industry to Ease Equipment Retrofits and Rebuilds

Available migration solutions increase control and configuration options for users, while protecting current equipment investments

MEQUON, Wis., March 14, 2002 - Comprehensive machine control packages, backed by the service and support of complete automation leader Rockwell Automation, deliver improved product quality and process efficiency for pulp and paper mills looking to upgrade, modernize or automate mill applications - from small retrofit projects to comprehensive new process installations.

Rockwell Automation solutions include Allen-Bradley ControlLogix(TM) controllers, Reliance Electric(R) motors, Allen-Bradley PanelView(TM) operator interfaces and Reliance Electric and Allen-Bradley AC and DC drives. With the recent addition of several migration solutions such as the 56AMXN module, 1756 drive module, Multibus ControlNet(TM) (MBCN) module and both DPS style and Bulletin 1395 style DC retrofit controller, Rockwell Automation custom-built control systems allow users to take advantage of the latest automation technology to enhance process efficiency and product quality, while maximizing existing equipment investments.

- 56AMXN module. The 56AXMN module allows an application running on an Allen-Bradley ControlLogix controller to communicate with a Reliance Electric AutoMax(TM) distributed control system or AutoMax remote I/O networks. The module provides the capability to use a ControlLogix platform without changing the DCS Network architecture. Also, when section replacements are considered, this module provides an easy integration with the existing AutoMax systems.

- 1756 drive module. The 1756 drive module is a single-slot module which allows users to keep existing Reliance Electric DPS style drives in place when updating drive control to a ControlLogix-based solution. With the ControlLogix drive module, existing Reliance Electric DPS drives can communicate directly with a ControlLogix controller, making retrofits more affordable because users don't need to change all of their drive equipment to communicate with each other. Each drive module interfaces with an individual DPS chassis - performing velocity, position and outer loop torque control.

- Multibus ControlNet (MBCN) module. The MBCN module allows an application running on a Reliance Electric AutoMax controller to communicate with and control ControlNet I/O devices. The MBCN module sends and receives scheduled information and can pass this data on to other processors on the network, including AutoMax, PLC-5(R), ControlLogix and ProcessLogix(TM) controllers. This allows faster throughput and a way for users to protect previous equipment investments, while migrating to new control platforms.

- DPS style and Bulletin 1395 style DC retrofit controller. The retrofit controller is designed to replace the electronic controls of existing DC drives while retaining one of the most expensive components in a DC variable speed drive - the SCR Bridge structure. In many cases, the technology of the electronic DC control is the limiting factor for improving drive or machine performance. Replacing analog with digital control can reduce maintenance costs and downtime, while upgrading to the most advanced drive control. The retrofit controller can be adapted to almost any DC power bridge regardless of the original manufacturer.

Rockwell Automation combines factory engineering and manufacturing with 10 Local Drive Solution Centers, offering pulp and paper control system users a local resource for drive manufacturing, service and support. In addition, mills can access Drives Field Modernization project managers for local application support, drives field engineers for system commissioning, troubleshooting and repair, and an extensive network of distributors for product support.
