OEIPL Releases New Versions of SafeSquid: Content Filtering Internet Proxy, for Linux and Windows

OEIPL, developers of the popular content filtering software - SafeSquid, have released a new version for Linux and Windows. The highlights of the release are NTLM authentication / SSO support and LDAP / AD User-Group mapping.

Mumbai - In SafeSquid versions previous to ntlm.RC2.0, authentication was session based, and users were presented with an authentication pop-up for every new session. The users were required to enter their valid credentials, depending on what authenticating server the proxy was configured to authenticate users from, to gain access to Internet. A variety of authenticating servers can be used, like an Active Directory, LDAP, Radius, POP3, MySQL, Unix, etc. Although a good security measure, session-based authentication is not readily accepted in large Enterprises, since it causes inconvenience to users.

The latest SafeSquid Linux version - ntlm.RC2.0, now supports NTLM authentication, or Single Sign On. NTLM uses a challenge-response mechanism for authentication, in which clients are able to prove their identities without sending a password to the server. This allows access to clients using Windows Integrated Authentication in Microsoft-centric Networks, without an authentication pop-up.

The latest Windows version - 3.2.1.0, has an option to enable / disable NTLM authentication, but at the moment it is inactive. This feature will be available in the next version, which is expected to be released in early January 2010.

Both new releases, for Linux and Windows, sport a very tight integration with LDAP based Directory Services. A newly designed LDAP Sub-System (LSS) has been introduced that allows simple integration to AD / LDAP server. With LSS, users can be applied a Group-Profile, based on the User-Group that users belongs to, on the AD / LDAP server. This makes granular group-based access policies to be defined very easily.
