MIPS-Based(TM) Combination HD/Blu-ray Disc(TM) Player from LG Electronics Wins Coveted 'Best of CES' Award
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jan. 18 -- MIPS Technologies' (NASDAQ:MIPS) licensees and their customers were front and center at last week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. More than two dozen companies demonstrated and displayed design innovations and new products based on the industry-leading MIPS® architecture.

Honored this year with a "Best of CES" Award was the MIPS-Based(TM) LG BH100 high-definition video disc player from LG Electronics-the industry's first player capable of accommodating both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD formats. Utilizing Broadcom's MIPS-Based BCM7440 Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD SoC solution, the LG BH100 will allow consumers to purchase the high-definition discs of their choice without being limited to a single format.

Actions Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
Actions Semiconductor, one of China's leading fabless semiconductor companies, introduced its Series 13 product family, featuring the new dual- core architecture with a 32-bit MIPS core and a 24-bit DSP, supporting full video and audio functionality on larger QVGA color displays. The Series 13 product family leverages MIPS' low power characteristics and is designed to meet consumer demand for high-quality multi-media playback on-the-go.
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) unveiled the industry's first High-Definition TV (HDTV) digital cable tuner for Windows Vista(TM) with its ATI TV Wonder(TM) Digital Cable Tuner, a MIPS-Based SoC. The device enables a PC to compete on a level footing with traditional consumer electronic devices, becoming a home entertainment hub. For the first time, users can build a media PC and watch, record and play back any and all of the content seen on a digital TV. Last October, AMD and ATI joined forces, combining AMD's technology leadership in microprocessors with ATI's strengths in graphics, chipsets and consumer electronics, including DTV.
ASUSTeK Computer Inc.
ASUSTeK introduced a new line of Wireless for HDMI products for the digital home, including accessory devices and embedded designs that dramatically simplify connections between home audio and video electronic components. Derived from MIPS-Based innovations in ultra wideband technology by Tzero, these new products enable distribution of high-definition video streams around the home-significantly reducing installation and equipment costs for service providers.
Atheros Communications, Inc.
Atheros Communications, Inc., a leading developer of advanced wireless solutions, demonstrated the expanded performance of its MIPS-Based XSPAN(TM) 802.11n technology and the real-world networking benefits that are enjoyed by consumers today: multiple, simultaneous streaming of HD video, audio, multi- player gaming, VoIP and data-all on a single wireless LAN (WLAN) network. Today, XSPAN is the most widely adopted 802.11n technology in the retail networking and PC OEM markets.
China's Haier Group introduced Broadcom's BCM3551 digital TV SoC into its B Series, E Series and S Series products, its family of large-sized LCD HDTVs. The MIPS-Based BCM3551, featuring superior video quality and high performance processing in a highly integrated design, significantly reduces the number of chips required, enabling Haier to expand its HDTV offerings at affordable consumer price points.
Coship Electronics Co., Ltd.
Coship featured Broadcom's market leading high definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) IP set-top box silicon in its AnySight 810 Series dual-mode IP/terrestrial digital STB targeted specifically for the high-growth Chinese STB market. Broadcom's MIPS-Based BCM7402 and BCM7452 chipsets allow Coship's dual-mode digital STBs to receive cable, satellite or terrestrial broadcast content, as well as premium on-demand services from an IP network through DSL or fiber-to-building connections.
DIRECTV announced an agreement with Broadcom to enable its launch of Basic Standard Definition through Advanced HDTV DVR Set-Top Box Platforms. MIPS- Based Broadcom semiconductor solutions for the satellite set-top box market are being used as the core technology in many DIRECTV high-definition television (HDTV) and basic standard definition (SD) set-top boxes.
Westell (Illinois) announced that it is the first to market with a product that uses Entropic's MIPS-Based c.LINK-270(TM) chipset to offer fiber customers a new broadband router that networks home entertainment via existing in-house cable, Ethernet or WiFi. This makes media networking easy and seamless in typical home environments.
Hitron Technology (Taiwan) announced a triple-play broadband DSL gateway allowing multiple HDTV streams, VoIP channels and guaranteed QoS using Entropic's MIPS-Based c.LINK-270(TM) solution. It makes home digital entertainment networking easy by offering seamless connectivity via existing in-house cable, Ethernet or WiFi.
Hisense announced a new generation of digital flat panel televisions capable of receiving and displaying high-definition video wirelessly and from a range of entertainment components. Hisense demonstrated the first of these products -- the TLM4288P -- a 42-inch liquid crystal display flat-panel TV. Using Tzero's MIPS-Based UWB, the TLM4288P operates at transmission speeds of up to 480 megabits per second (Mbps) to support even the highest demands of high-definition video and IPTV.
LG Electronics announced the selection of Raza Microelectronics' (RMI's) MIPS-Based Alchemy Au1200 Processor for its LN 790 Portable Navigation Device with Multimedia Capabilities. RMI's high-performance, low-power SoC solution was chosen for its performance per milliwatt and high level of integration.
NXP Semiconductors introduced and demonstrated the MIPS-Based STB225 development kit, the industry's first high-definition (HD) IP set-top box (STB) platform with support for Microsoft Windows Embedded CE 6.0. The platform was developed to help accelerate the acceptance of IPTV worldwide.
NXP also showcased the SAA7164E and SAA7163E processors, the first in a family of PC TV processors designed to bring heightened levels of performance and system integration to desktop and notebook multimedia PCs. The SAA7164E provides dual channel TV as well as radio capture and streaming capabilities with hardware AV compression, allowing for independent watch, record and advanced personal video recorder (PVR) features, while the SAA7163E is a cost- effective single-channel alternative.
Raza Microelectronics, Inc. (RMI®)
RMI announced two new MIPS-Based products for Portable Media Players and Personal Navigation Devices. RMI's Alchemy Au1250(TM) boosts application processing performance to 600 MHz, with remarkably low power consumption, and the Au1210(TM) targets portable navigation and economy applications. Both new ICs maintain pin and software compatibility with the popular Au1200 chip.
Selecting Broadcom's comprehensive MIPS-Based Blu-ray Disc chipset solution, Samsung Electronics introduced its second-generation, high- definition Blu-ray Disc player for the home entertainment industry.
Samsung also announced the selection of RMI's MIPS-Based Alchemy Au1200 processor for its T-DMB mobile TV and digital photo frame applications. The powerful MIPS-based processor enables users to watch digital TV on the go, download media quickly and enjoy DVD-quality video efficiently delivered at full resolution, with numerous video format options.
Six of the top consumer electronics manufacturers are using the MIPS-Based Sigma Designs SMP8630 series of secure media processors to power their Blu-ray Disc players. Several units shown on the show floor included Panasonic's DMP BD10, Pioneer's BDP HD1, and Sony's BDP-S1.
Westinghouse Digital introduced a new generation of LCD HDTVs utilizing Broadcom's BCM3560 digital TV SoC to deliver superior video, audio and graphics quality. As a MIPS-Based design, the Broadcom® BCM3560 digital TV SoC provides a level of integration and advanced performance that enables manufacturers to cost-effectively transition product lines to affordable high- quality analog/digital televisions in a variety of size and display options.
Zoran demonstrated several MIPS-Based technologies, including:
o SupraHD® high definition television designs and STB products for Asia, Europe and North American markets
o DVD Recorder reference designs for Digital Video Broadcast STBs, PVRs, DTVs, and new combo products based on Zoran's Activa® 200 family of processors along with new products from Pioneer, Sansui, Thomson/RCA, Toshiba and others
o New digital camera designs and new models from Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Samsung, Sony and others using the COACH digital camera processor
Zoran also demonstrated MIPS-Based SupraHD® 760 ATSC processor with integrated demodulator, a single-chip HDTV solution. Zoran announced that multiple customers will be launching new ATSC Digital TV products for the U.S. market powered by Zoran's SupraHD 760 processors. The processors integrate both market-leading HDTV processor technology and 8VSB demodulation technology into a single-chip solution, enabling exceptional price performance for manufacturers of digital televisions.
