Conductive Grounding Pads for ESD and Cushioning



Stockwell Rubber Company announces the availability of a new, lower cost method of constructing their conductive grounding pads. Conductive grounding pads protect solid fuel rocket motors by safely grounding ESD and cushioning motor housings against impact and excessive vibration. These Rocket Motor Mounting pads are bonded to aluminum and steel chocks and support structures with a conductive silicone rubber adhesive. This allows the static charges to be safely discharged to the metal carriage structure, unlike the non-conductive composite materials used in the past. Originally, Stockwell Rubber Company bonded and fully wrapped .03" thick carbon filled conductive silicone rubber around closed cell silicone sponge to fabricate Conductive Grounding Pads. The wrapped conductive silicone completed the ESD grounding from the top surface to the aluminum or steel support structure. Now, Stockwell applies a carbon filled conductive silicone coating to the edges of Conductive Grounding Pads to complete the grounding path. This construction reduces cost by 15 to 20% compared to the original fully wrapped construction.

The silicone rubber composition allows for long-term outdoor use. In accelerated age testing conducted by the U.S. Testing Company, this composition proved its ability to resist aging due to sunlight and ozone for ten years. Several installations using the original construction have reported service lasting over ten years.

Conductive Grounding pads are typically specified in thicknesses from .25" through 2.00" thick, widths from 2.0" through 40.0" and lengths from 10.0" to 72.0". All Conductive Grounding Pads are made to specification. Stockwell Rubber Company provides RTV60-CON carbon filled conductive adhesive to cold bond Conductive Grounding Pads to aluminum or steel chocks and support structures.
