Original Press Release:

New PXI/cPCI System Comes Out Of Labs And Into The Field

~ System can be unplugged and set up off site without turning off or rebooting ~

Azusa, CA (March 8, 2004) - Today Acme Portable Machines, Inc., a leading provider of rugged portable computers, has announced the immediate availability of their new GCP382, a portable PXI/CompactPCI (cPCI) system designed for easy deployment from the lab to the field regardless of power availability or power interruption. Using a Transmeta(TM) 5800/800MHz processor controller card in a 44TE/HP slot bay, the GCP382 is based upon the company's portable lunchbox style form factor providing 7 slots available for add on cards of either PXI or cPCI 3U form factors and comes with a 15" built in LCD touch screen and keyboard with touch pad. The new system is designed to meet applications in industrial control, test and measurement, military and communications markets.

Using the portability design and features of Acme's portable computers, the new system provides seamless uninterrupted power from the desktop to the field and back again. The unit's standard uninterrupted power supply (UPS) lets users move the system without turning the system off and back on again, rebooting and running programs - simply unplug the system and move it to another site with the current program running. The unit also has a universal input power source running on 175W AC, DC power supplies or optional battery pack allaying cumbersome tasks of finding an adequate power source.

The embedded controller uses an ultra-low power high stability Transmeta(TM) 5800/800MHz processor with a 20GB hard drive, and 128MB of SDRAM upgradeable to 512MB. The card also has an extended I/O, VGA connector, two USB ports, RS-232 connector, a printer port, two Ethernet/Fast Ethernet/Gigabit Ethernet ports, and two PS/2 mouse and keyboard connectors.

The chassis meets PICMG 2.0, CompactPCI R3.0 specifications and supports 7 bus-master PCI devices on either PXI/cPCI peripheral slots. Seven slots add the benefit of inserting and removing I/O cards while the system is still in operation, providing efficient hot swapping when a card goes down or the user desires to change the capability of the system with a new card.

The system is built of a rugged construction to meet any environment such as on a cart, under an air wing, in a bouncing truck or a water craft/vessel. All drives are shock mount and the entire chassis is rated to 15Gs of force.

The battery module is a portable PXI system with a battery charger Ni-MH battery pack providing auto switching from one battery to the second with no loss of power and auto charging with protective features built-in when using 24V motor batteries. The battery pack offers close to 100 Watt-hours of energy and can tolerate two times the rated discharge current without adverse effects.

Price And Availability

Purchased from Acme, or through its resellers or distributors channels, the GCP382 is available off the shelf, or can be user-configured in as little as 24-hours. The system is bundled with Windows 2000 and System Guard(TM) and is priced as low as $7,500 in single unit quantities with significant OEM and ODM discounts available.
