Original Press Release:

New Schroff CompactPCI Telecom System Compliant with PICMG 2.16 Packet Switching Backplane Specification

Warwick, RI, February 2003 - Schroff®, the global leader in electronic enclosure solutions, has introduced a new telecom system compliant with PICMG 2.16, the CompactPCI Packet Switching Backplane Specification released in 2001. The new system is a complete, flexible packaging platform for intelligent telecom and LAN network interfaces.

The new Schroff CompactPCI 2.16 System incorporates backplane, power supply, cooling, and provision for monitoring into a single package that provides theoretical data transfer rates of up to 50 Gbit/sec. In addition to compatibility with the PICMG 2.16 specification, the backplane also supports star fabric (PICMG 2.17) and serial mesh (PICMG 2.20) applications.

The new CompactPCI Telecom System is based on a 19", 10U-high subrack with a Schroff CompactPCI packet switching backplane. The backplane incorporates 14 node slots and two fabric slots to facilitate the construction of a redundant high availability system using 6U boards.

The new system includes two Schroff 3U-high, 19" maxpowerPRO power supplies (250 W each), and can be optionally configured with two additional maxpowerPRO units to provide up to 3+1 power supply redundancy. Two additional 3U slots are reserved for redundant operation of Schroff Chassis Monitoring Modules (CMM), which enable remote monitoring (via TCP/IP) of crucial system parameters such as voltages, temperatures, and fan operation.

Cooling is provided by a hot-swappable plug-in fan unit, with two axial fans and a filter mat located beneath the board section. Total cooling capacity is approximately 1200 W. If one fan fails to operate at the correct set speed, the other automatically switches on, and an alarm is activated.

The new Schroff CompactPCI Complete Telecom System is available immediately. Contact Schroff for pricing information.
