Compact Code Readers target industrial applications.

Press Release Summary:

Simatic MV440 Code Readers read various data matrix codes on objects in harsh industrial conditions. Stationary 1D/2D code readers process up to 80 codes/sec and detect up to 15 different code types, and up to 50 codes can be decoded on single image capture. Integrated lighting allows use at distances up to 80 cm and, with external lighting, readers work at up to 3 m distances. They integrate web-based interface as well as interfaces to Profibus-DP, Profinet IO, Ethernet TCP/IP, and RS232.

New Family of Compact and Flexible Code-Reading Systems for Industrial Applications

ATLANTA - Siemens Energy & Automation, Inc. today announced the introduction of its new compact Simatic MV440 code-reading systems. These stationary 1D/2D code readers feature high read reliability and speed as well as diverse communication and connection options.

A primary use of the compact Simatic MV440 code-reading systems, which feature high protection rating IP67, is for reading data matrix codes such as direct part marks (DPMs) on objects under difficult ambient conditions in demanding industrial environments. Thanks to its flexible lighting options, the system can be adapted to different types of applications.

The Simatic MV440 reads up to 80 codes per second, reliably detecting up to 15 different code types. As a result of its "multi-code reading" feature, up to 50 codes can be decoded every time an image is captured. This is advantageous for bulk-reading of several objects that are stacked one on top of the other, for example.

The new code reading system is available with integrated lighting for use at a distance up to 80 centimeters. When using external lighting, a working distance of up to 3 meters can be achieved with and without verification. Additionally, it is available with a resolution of 640x480 or 1024x768 pixels.

The new Simatic MV440 has an "auto trigger" function enabling it to record images permanently at maximum speed and, at the same time, to evaluate them. The reader looks for codes of any length, without the need for any external trigger signal. This function is particularly suitable for slow-moving objects and in applications where precise triggering can be difficult to implement.

With the Simatic MV440 verifier versions, code quality can be measured, making it possible to ensure the quality of codes does not fall below a critical value. Code quality can be verified across the entire production process identifying possible points of code quality contamination.

The Simatic MV440 has integrated interfaces to Profibus-DP, Profinet IO, Ethernet TCP/IP, RS232. Mixed operation with RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) systems connected to the same communication module is possible.

The new code reading system is parameterized and commissioned through a built-in web server only requiring a PC with Internet Explorer. No additional external software is needed. For most applications, the parameters are preset automatically. The web-based user interface provides comprehensive operator control and visualization functions, even in evaluation mode. Additionally, Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) make it possible to display image information.
